Phoenix native Keondre Simmons, 33, called in sick for his Aug. 3 shift at Shake Shack in Kierland Commons. His boss probably thought he needed to rest and hydrate — but police now believe he was actually using that time off to plot a remarkably short-sighted heist at his own workplace. On the afternoon of Aug. 3, according to the California Post, a masked man walked into the restaurant. Despite the face covering, the staff now say the man had oddly familiar characteristics. The intruder reportedly had intimate knowledge of the kitchen layout, the exact placement of equipment like gloves and cleaning wipes, and the inner workings of the office. The staff immediately noticed his mannerisms The masked gunman — who, by this point, the staff noticed sounded a lot like Simmons — rounded up one employee and the manager and took them inside the walk-in freezer. The masked man reportedly asked the two captives to open the restaurant safe, which he knew exactly where to find, and coerced the manager into opening it. He then took roughly $2,800 in cash. But the masked man’s misadventures didn’t end there. He made them kneel at gunpoint, took their phones and destroyed them in a sink full of water. He then locked them inside the walk-in freezer and made his grand escape. Fortunately, the trapped staff used the freezer’s emergency release from the inside and immediately called police, telling them they believed they had just been robbed by Simmons. When police began their investigation and started conducting interviews, things immediately went from tragic to comedic. The two victims told police that they could recognize the suspect’s voice, body build and specific mannerisms. Turns out, when you work alongside someone for 40 hours every week, you can notice things that even a gun pointed at your face cannot distract you from remembering. He simply went back to work However, for Simmons, the last thing on his mind was apparently that he was the main suspect. After all, $2,800 is not exactly enough money to drive to the border and change your identity. So even if he did do it, he didn’t really have too many options. On Aug. 5, Simmons — now supposedly feeling better — simply went back to work. Reportedly, Simmons didn’t even make it past the asphalt. Police had been tracking his phone, and the moment he arrived at the Shake Shack parking lot, they believed they had gathered enough evidence to arrest him. He was subsequently arrested while still wearing his Shake Shack uniform. View this post on Instagram Simmons was then booked into the Maricopa County Jail, where he faces a laundry list of serious felony charges, including armed robbery, kidnapping and aggravated assault. Reportedly, he was still wearing his Shake Shack uniform during his court appearance. It’s customary for prosecutors to look for ways to resolve cases as quickly as possible, potentially through a guilty plea, so Simmons could eventually be offered a deal. For now, however, he has not yet entered a plea. Simmons is being held on a $100,000 bond.
