During that period, cocoa prices surged by a staggering 250%, sugar climbed to its highest valuation in more than a decade, and several major rice-exporting nations responded by shutting their borders to protect domestic supplies. At the time, these shocks felt dramatic and unprecedented. Yet, it is important to recognize that they occurred under geopolitical and climatic conditions that were, in retrospect, comparatively benign. They took place before the escalation of hostilities between the United States and Iran, before the full-scale fertiliser crunch tightened global agricultural inputs, and before the planet's warming baseline had risen yet another notch, compounding the stress on already fragile food systems. Now, the US National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has officially confirmed that El Niño has returned, and perhaps more concerningly, the atmospheric and oceanic signals are rapidly strengthening. The Oceanic Niño Index (ONI)—which tracks the three-month running average of sea surface temperature anomalies in the east-central Pacific—is currently trending toward what forecasters describe as a strong or even very strong event. NOAA has assigned a 63% probability that this episode will reach "very strong" status. On its own, that statistical projection would already warrant close attention from policymakers, agribusinesses, and investors alike. However, this El Niño is not arriving in a vacuum. It is overlaying a host of pre-existing vulnerabilities, most notably the ongoing disruption in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint for global fertiliser shipments from the Middle East. This disruption has throttled supply flows at precisely the moment when farmers in the Northern Hemisphere need to secure essential inputs for the upcoming planting seasons. Consequently, this climate event is landing at a time of unusual and deeply concerning fragility for global food production networks. For investors, the central question is no longer whether El Niño matters—it clearly does—but rather which specific markets carry the greatest exposure, and whether current commodity prices have truly priced in the magnitude of what lies ahead. It is worth emphasising that commodity prices are inherently volatile, shaped by a complex interplay of weather patterns, geopolitical shocks, supply chain interruptions, and sudden shifts in speculative sentiment. Exposure through commodity futures, in particular, can experience dramatic and rapid price fluctuations, making risk assessment all the more critical. The fundamental mechanics of El Niño are well understood by climate scientists. The phenomenon begins when equatorial trade winds weaken, allowing large pools of warm water to shift eastward across the Pacific Ocean. This redistribution of heat triggers a wholesale reorganisation of atmospheric circulation patterns, with far-reaching consequences: drought where seasonal monsoons should deliver life-giving rain, torrential flooding in regions that are typically arid, and abnormal heat stress arriving weeks earlier than usual in some of the world's most important growing belts. Historical episodes—most notably the strong events of 1997–98, 2015–16, and the more recent 2023–24 cycle—each left indelible marks on agricultural output, driving down yields for staple crops and sending shockwaves through international commodity markets. What makes the current situation fundamentally different, however, is the climatic baseline upon which this El Niño is unfolding. The past eleven years collectively rank as the warmest on record, a stark testament to the accelerating pace of global heating. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has made it unequivocally clear that every additional fraction of a degree of warming raises not only the frequency but also the intensity and severity of extreme weather events. The World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) reinforces this view, noting that El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) events now transpire within a warmer atmosphere and a warmer ocean—conditions that fundamentally alter their behaviour. Warmer air holds more moisture, soils evaporate their water content more rapidly, evapotranspiration rates climb, and crops encounter water-deficit conditions much earlier in their growth cycles than they would have just a few decades ago. This means that even a moderate El Niño today can produce agricultural impacts that rival those of a much stronger event in the past. Critically, the agricultural consequences of El Niño do not materialise overnight. The most acute effects on crop yields and food supply chains tend to lag behind the peak of the oceanic warming by six to twelve months. This delayed response implies that the full pressure on planting cycles, harvest volumes, and ultimately consumer food prices is still accumulating. The worst may not be felt until well into 2026 or beyond, giving markets a narrow window to prepare—or to panic. Geographically, South and Southeast Asia carry the heaviest and most direct exposure to El Niño's disruptive force. Weaker monsoon rainfall, coupled with above-normal temperatures, is the classic signature of this climate pattern for that region. The implications for staple crops like rice, sugar, and coffee are profound. Historically, during prior strong El Niño events, rice production in major exporting countries such as India and Thailand has declined sharply, tightening global stockpiles and driving up international prices. There is now a genuine and elevated risk that renewed supply stress could bring export restrictions back into play, further constraining global balances and exacerbating food price inflation in import-dependent nations. As such, the convergence of climatic extremity, geopolitical tension, and structural market fragility suggests that the coming months will test the resilience of the global food system in ways not seen in a generation.
