Epic Universe may still be one of the newest theme parks in Central Florida, but even brand-new attractions need time away from guests.Universal Orlando Resort has now added another closure to its calendar, and this one will affect guests visiting Epic Universe in early 2027. Universal currently lists the attraction as unavailable through February 4, giving the ride a closure of less than two weeks. Still, anyone planning an Epic Universe vacation during that stretch will want to know about the change before arriving at the park.And while losing any attraction can be frustrating when you’ve spent months planning a Universal vacation, the timing of this particular closure makes quite a bit of sense.Fyre Drill Will Close at Epic Universe in JanuaryAccording to Universal Orlando’s refurbishment calendar, Fyre Drill will close on January 25 and remain unavailable through February 4, 2027.That means guests visiting during that window won’t be able to experience one of the more unusual attractions found at Epic Universe.Fyre Drill sits inside How to Train Your Dragon — Isle of Berk, one of the five major worlds that make up the park. Rather than sending guests speeding through Berk on a traditional coaster, the attraction puts riders aboard colorful boats and gives them water cannons.Credit: UniversalThe basic idea fits perfectly into a village filled with dragons.Ruffnut and Tuffnut host the experience, with riders essentially learning how to fight fires by spraying water from their boats. Guests can fire at targets throughout the attraction, but that’s only part of the fun. The water cannons can also be aimed toward other boats, turning a relatively simple ride into something much more interactive.Of course, that also means there’s a pretty good chance you’re going to get wet.The Timing of the Closure Makes SenseJanuary isn’t exactly the worst time for Universal to take its only Epic Universe water ride offline.Fyre Drill is currently the park’s only water attraction, and its popularity can change dramatically depending on the weather. On a scorching summer afternoon in Central Florida, getting sprayed with water can feel like part of the appeal. During a chilly January morning, guests may have a very different opinion.Water attractions also tend to require additional maintenance, making the cooler part of the year a logical time to schedule refurbishment work. Fyre Drill experienced a similar closure during the previous winter and often posted relatively short waits when it was operating during colder weather.Universal is essentially choosing a window when taking the attraction offline should affect fewer guests who actually want to ride it.That doesn’t mean the closure won’t matter, though.For families with younger guests, Fyre Drill provides a very different experience from some of Epic Universe’s larger attractions. It doesn’t rely on major drops, high speeds, or intense coaster elements to create the fun. Instead, the attraction offers something interactive that groups can experience together.Losing that option temporarily makes the lineup inside Isle of Berk a little smaller.Epic Universe Is Entering a Different PhaseThe closure also serves as a reminder of how quickly Epic Universe has moved beyond its grand-opening period.Universal’s newest Orlando theme park officially opened in May 2025. By January 2027, it will have welcomed guests for well over a year and a half.That matters because maintenance doesn’t stop simply because attractions are new.Theme park rides operate for hours every day while carrying thousands of guests. Moving components wear down. Effects need attention. Water systems require maintenance. Paint fades under the Florida sun. If those dates happen to overlap with their vacation, the attraction is simply unavailable to them.That’s why checking refurbishment calendars before booking—or at least before arriving—has become increasingly important at Universal Orlando.Another Epic Universe Experience Is Closing FirstFyre Drill isn’t the only Epic Universe experience with downtime on the calendar.Before the January 2027 refurbishment arrives, The Untrainable Dragon will temporarily become unavailable from September 15 through September 20, 2026.Interestingly, both affected experiences are located within How to Train Your Dragon — Isle of Berk.The closures don’t overlap, and they’re separated by several months, so guests aren’t looking at a situation where multiple major Isle of Berk experiences will disappear simultaneously based on the currently announced calendar.Still, it’s something worth watching as Epic Universe continues operating.As the park gets older, scheduled refurbishments will naturally become more common. Universal has an enormous collection of technically complicated attractions spread across Celestial Park, SUPER NINTENDO WORLD, Dark Universe, The Wizarding World of Harry Potter — Ministry of Magic, and How to Train Your Dragon — Isle of Berk.Keeping all of those attractions running will inevitably require occasional closures.What the Fyre Drill Closure Means for Your VacationIf you’re heading to Epic Universe between January 25 and February 4, 2027, the biggest thing to know is simple: plan your day without Fyre Drill.The attraction’s temporary absence shouldn’t dramatically change an entire Epic Universe vacation, particularly since the closure comes during a cooler part of the year when demand for a water ride may be lower.However, families hoping to experience every attraction in the park won’t be able to complete that goal during the refurbishment.Credit: Andrew Boardwine, Inside the MagicGuests visiting immediately before or after the scheduled dates should also keep an eye on Universal’s operating calendar as their trip gets closer. Refurbishment schedules can sometimes change, and operational issues can always affect attraction availability independently of planned maintenance.For everyone else, the January timing could actually be the best-case scenario for this type of work.Taking a water attraction offline during the colder months is much easier to swallow than losing it during June, July, or August, when Florida temperatures can make getting soaked feel like a reward rather than a consequence.Epic Universe Closures Will Become Part of Vacation PlanningEpic Universe being new doesn’t mean every attraction will remain available every day.We’re now reaching the point where scheduled refurbishments are becoming a normal part of the park’s operation. That’s not necessarily a warning sign about the attractions themselves. Regular maintenance is simply part of running a theme park, especially one filled with complicated ride systems, interactive elements, water features, and advanced technology.For now, the Fyre Drill closure is relatively short.The attraction is scheduled to go offline January 25, 2027, and remain closed through February 4. Once the refurbishment ends, guests should once again be able to board their boats, grab the water cannons, and see just how dry—or soaked—they manage to stay.For anyone visiting during those dates, though, one Epic Universe attraction will officially be off the table.And as 2027 approaches, it will be worth keeping a close eye on Universal Orlando’s calendar.
