Netflix, the world’s biggest subscription service for movies and TV shows, has a gaming division. It hosts both its own and others’ games on there, such as Red Dead Redemption and GTA San Andreas. However, its first-party outputs are about to go down as the company has decided to shutter two of its studios. As Game File reports, Netflix is going to shut down Night School Studio, which it bought in 2021, as well as Moonloot, a game development studio founded in 2022. Ironically, Netflix’s own chief executive, Greg Peters, praised Night School for its latest game’s performance, which, as he said, had “solid numbers,” Game File explains. Oxenfree is among the most unique games you’ll ever experience. It’s a damn shame that its creators are being treated like this. Image via Night School Studio Night School Studio is best known for its supernatural horror game Oxenfree, which also eventually got a less prominent sequel. That game is definitely one of my favorite horror games of all time and probably one of my most beloved titles overall. It’s such a unique and different experience that rewards replays in truly meaningful ways, and it showed me just how talented Night School was as a studio. Unfortunately, we won’t be seeing anything more from it down the line, which is what happens when a huge corporation sweeps in to hijack an up-and-coming studio and decides to do basically nothing with it. At least, nothing significant. I hope the developers impacted by this shutdown at least find new homes and bring their invaluable talent to someone who’ll truly appreciate it. Additionally, Game File reports that Netflix will be cutting an undisclosed number of developers from other studios under its umbrella. It, of course, declined to say just how many people are being laid off, though that’s probably going to become public at some point in the future. These aren’t the first studios Netflix decided to shut down or cut ties with. Last year, studio Boss Fight was closed, while Spry Fox was sold to its original owners. Not a lot has come out of Netflix’s gaming business, truth be told, though things can still change for the better, as they sure as hell cannot get any worse.
