Businessman Godfrey KirumiraBy Prisca WanyenyaThe probe into the operations at Uganda Railway Cooperation have taken another twist after businessman, Godfrey Kirumira sued both the Ministry of Works and Transport and the Managing Director of Uganda Railways Cooperation for revealing that he took ownership of the contested pieces of land belonging the Cooperation.The revelation was made by Julius Maganda Wandera, Minister of State for Transport, while appearing before Parliament’s Committee on Physical Infrastructure on 7th August 2026, where he requested for Parliament’s protection on how evidence will be handled before the Committee amidst the legal battles.“The Ministry and the Managing Director has been sued by Kirumira. I have attached that document to you over revealing information to the committee and assuming that now they are tarnishing the image of Kirumira and right now as I talk, we are likely to proceed before court and I wanted to bring this to the committee so that we get the protection of my team that I come with, to some extent that while you may be asking some documents, we may have to design a way how we might offer this information to you,” said Maganda.The Minister informed Parliament that in 2006 Kampala City Council granted a sublease to Philadelphia Trade and Industry Limited for a period of five years and the search at the Uganda Registration Services Bureau found that Godfrey Kirumira Kalule holds 500 shares, while Gideon Kirumira Kabuye holds 400 shares and Brenda Kirumira Namuga holds 100 shares in the company.Parliament was also informed that the last transaction at the time of the search found that there was a caveat lodged by Philadelphia Trade and Industry Limited in 2020 and URSB instructed the Uganda Railways Police to investigate the transaction that occurred in the in respect of the open space before the year 2000 and we await the outcome of the investigation to inform our next course of action.The Chairperson, Committee for Physical Infrastructure Mwine Mpaka asked URC to clarify if the information they shared before the Committee that the land belonged to URC was right, prompting him to ask why the Cooperation should be worried about the defamation suit.He noted, “Did you tell us the truth or you are lying? If you are telling the truth you have nothing to worry about because if you are sure that land belonged to URC then you have reason as an accounting officer to establish how that land was transferred by the land board.
