Nearly every film is getting a sequel these days, from Freaky Friday to Top Gun, but one we did not see coming? The Social Network, the 2010 film from writer Aaron Sorkin and director David Fincher that followed the rise of Facebook from Mark Zuckerberg’s Harvard dorm room to one of the most powerful forces on the internet.But Facebook’s story—at least according to Sorkin—is not done yet. More than 15 years after the original Oscar-nominated drama, he will revisit the platform amid a whole new era of social media. Here’s what to know about the sequel, which has officially been titled The Social Reckoning.What will The Social Reckoning be about?According to Deadline, the film will be based on “The Facebook Files,” a series of investigative reports published in October 2021 by The Wall Street Journal that exposed the harms Facebook knowingly caused, or allowed to persist, on its platforms. These claims ranged from suppressing certain political movements to having a toxic impact on teen girls.“Facebook Inc. knows, in acute detail, that its platforms are riddled with flaws that cause harm, often in ways only the company fully understands,” per the introduction to the files. “That is the central finding of a Wall Street Journal series, based on a review of internal Facebook documents, including research reports, online employee discussions and drafts of presentations to senior management.”Although the sequel news might sound surprising, Sorkin, who is writing and directing, had been thinking about doing a Social Network follow-up for some time, but was searching for the right angle. He found much-needed inspiration following the Jan. 6, 2020 insurrection, which he believes Facebook played a part in. Sources emphasized to Deadline, however, that this won’t be a “January 6 movie,” but will instead highlight a range of issues including the 2020 election, the site’s “effect on teens, preteens, violence, and countries outside the U.S.”In a November 2025 interview on The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast, Jeremy Allen White, who is in the cast, described the sequel as “a sort of continuation of the story of The Social Network... It takes place a while after the inception of what the first film was about, which is the inception of Facebook, the creation of Facebook. And [The Social Reckoning] is more about the effects of Facebook on us.”Who will be in the cast?Momodu Mansaray//Getty ImagesJeremy Strong (Succession) is confirmed to play Mark Zuckerberg, according to Variety. In an August 2026 interview with GQ, Strong explained that he wanted to do the role because it “fascinates me.” He likened himself stepping into Zuckerberg’s shoes to “Sebastian [Stan] playing Trump,” and Jeremy [Allen White] playing Bruce [Springsteen]”—“the perils of that could not be greater. To commit to it, and to be free within it, is a great challenge.”“It feels incredibly fraught,” he added, “to talk about the movie, to talk about Mark and being the person who is playing Mark and representing Mark in a sense to the world and to posterity; I feel an enormous sense of weight and responsibility. And listen, my job is to understand and defend his point of view and fight his fight.”Additional cast members will also include Mikey Madison (Anora), Jeremy Allen White (The Bear), and Bill Burr (The King of Staten Island).Madison will play Frances Haugen, “the data engineer-turned-whistleblower who went to the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Wall Street Journal with her information.” And White will play the “former WSJ tech reporter who leads the breaking of the Facebook files.” (He also confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that he’ll be playing a journalist.)Per Deadline, Wunmi Mosaku (Sinners) is in the cast.
