Nintendo and Shapefarm shared an official Creator’s Voice video that talks about the upcoming Switch 2 exclusive Orbitals and how its 1980’s inspired anime art style came to be. Creative Director Marcos Ramos, Key Animator Hidetoshi Yoshida, and Game Director Jakob Lundgren all discuss elements of the game’s development and its art direction. Marcos Ramos first mentioned how the team said, “let’s work on an anime game” when development on Orbitals first started and referenced how he grew up watching “basically a lot of the 80s cartoons that we all grew up watching.” Ramos then mentioned the nostaglia the team had for designs like that, specifically referencing things like line art. During the Hidetoshi Yoshida section, he mentioned he’s been in the industry for over 40 years ago and always did hand-drawn art. When discussing the anime approach used with Orbitals, Yoshida noted, “Ultimately, if the characters themselves aren’t interesting the entire work won’t be interesting, which is why I focused on acting, including facial expressions.” He also mentioned how the game uses the same sorts of colors, style, and timing. Here’s the full “Orbitals – Creator’s Voice” video. Orbitals will come to the Switch 2 on September 3, 2026.
