I unfortunately have a friend in this type of situation, he has poor money management to say the least and got himself way over his head in debt, rent payment, and having severe mental health problems and a disabled partner who doesn’t work. It happens and the thing is, stuff tends to cause a cascade. Health problems can often lead to medical debt, poor family situations can lead to difficulties with financial management issues and mental health problems, job loss on top of everything can exacerbate it. Am I suspicious? Sure. I also don’t give my friend money, ever, even though I do know his struggle personally, but if he was seeking a job, I’d help him in a heartbeat cause I know he does good work and I hire him for a lot of side projects. They are laying it on thick and oversharing for sure but I guess I just don’t understand the sheer vitriol and I’ve seen a lot of people far more deserving of it. I think my opinion would also change if they didn’t ask for work either. I’m realizing that maybe I’m less cynical and jaded than I thought.
