The ministry of Education and Sports has approved white veils as part of the institutional uniform for female Muslim health trainees.The directive, issued on August 6 by Dr Safinah Kisu Museene on behalf of the ministry’s permanent secretary, allows female Muslim trainees to cover their heads with a plain white veil as part of the approved institutional uniform in classrooms and clinical placement sites.“Female Muslim Trainees are permitted to cover their heads with a plain WHITE VEIL as an approved part of the institutional uniform,” the ministry said.The veil must cover the trainee’s head, ears and neck and be “neatly tucked inside the uniform collar”.However, the approval comes with conditions intended to ensure compliance with health and safety requirements in clinical settings.“All trainees who wear the approved veil must strictly comply with the standard of Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) applicable to their respective clinical units, hospital departments, and skills laboratories during training and service delivery,” the ministry said.The ministry also restricted the material and design of the approved veil, requiring it to be made of plain white fabric without stones, colourful decorations or other embellishments.“The approved material for the veil must be plain white fabric, entirely free from stones, colourful decorations, or any forms of embellishment,” the directive states.The guidelines will also apply during examinations and other assessments.
