Melvin Theuma told the court that Yorgen Fenech believed he was beyond the reach of the authorities while the Labour government was in power.According to Theuma, Fenech used to tell him: “Under Labour, no one can touch me.”Earlier today, Theuma was testifying in the trial over the murder of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia as prosecutors continued presenting secret recordings of conversations between the two men.He told the court that he had at one point encouraged Fenech to speak to then-Prime Minister Joseph Muscat about the murder, referring to Muscat and his former chief of staff Keith Schembri as people who held significant power.However, Theuma said Fenech was against the idea of approaching Muscat directly, saying this would be the “biggest mistake of my life.”The testimony was part of a series of recordings in which Fenech and Theuma discussed the murder and its possible consequences.Theuma also recalled Fenech saying that, had he known how much the situation would eventually escalate, he would never have gone through with it.Earlier evidence included recordings in which Fenech discussed possible prison sentences for himself, Theuma and the men accused of carrying out the assassination.Fenech has pleaded not guilty to complicity in the wilful homicide of Caruana Galizia and criminal association to commit her murder.Caruana Galizia was killed by a car bomb on 16th October 2017. Five men have already been convicted in connection with the assassination.•
