Decades after its introduction, the PK series continues to appear in conflicts across the globe, in the hands of both allies and adversaries. It is equally at home mounted on modern armored vehicles or improvised technicals. MaintenanceFor maintainers, particularly those supporting partner forces, the PK series offers a notable advantage over many Western and other Soviet-designed systems with its adjustable headspace. This feature significantly simplifies sustainment and repair in austere environments, with the ability to mismatch parts to keep guns up and set the headspace to keep them safe to operate. Unlike the AK, which requires careful bolt matching to achieve correct headspace and often demands higher-level support for barrel replacement, the PK allows maintainers to compensate for wear and component replacement through adjustment. This capability reduces downtime, eases logistical burdens, and keeps weapons operational longer.Understanding headspace in the PK system is critical, as the 7.62x54mm cartridge headspaces on the rim rather than the shoulder, making it a bit different from all NATO machine guns. The barrel interfaces with the locking block via angled tracks; note that there are at least three different sizes of barrel locking blocks. By adjusting the headspace screw on the locking block, the maintainer can shift the barrel slightly forward or rearward relative to the bolt once the locking pin is removed. This allows precise control over headspace to account for wear across the bolt, barrel, and locking surfaces. Gauging tools, where available, provide a more objective assessment of barrel conditions and should be used whenever possible. Also, as the chrome chips or flakes, it sparks when shot, increasing the visual signature.In many operational environments, especially those with limited resources, the prevailing mindset is simple: if the gun runs, it remains in service. While this approach is the most common, it must not override safety considerations. Headspace remains a critical factor regardless of external conditions. Every barrel and bolt combination should be checked to ensure it falls within safe limits before the weapon is returned to use. PKM with an estimated well over 200,000 rounds through it.
