Keith Schembri made the extraordinary claim in court that former police inspector and criminal lawyer David Gatt once waited for him naked in his office at Castille.During cross-examination, Schembri said Gatt visited him once before the assassination of Daphne Caruana Galizia.“I went to the toilet, and when I came back I found him waiting in my office naked,” Schembri testified, prompting audible surprise in the courtroom.Schembri said he remains unable to explain the incident. He also claimed that murder investigators Keith Arnaud and Kurt Zahra had previously warned him Gatt would try to meet him, allegedly telling him to “meet him once and then burn him.”Defence lawyer Gianella De Marco also referred to mobile phone data showing Schembri’s and Gatt’s phones connected to the same mobile phone mast on the morning of 16th August, 2017, before Caruana Galizia’s murder. Schembri said they were likely both going to Castille and suggested the date may have been when he encountered Gatt in his office.•
