Arkadia supermarkets are set to be acquired by Azzopardi Group, in a move that would significantly expand the company’s presence in Malta’s food retail sector.Last week, Mizzi Organisation announced it would be selling its chain of five Arkadia supermarkets to a third-party buyer. The purchaser has since been identified as Azzopardi Group.Best known for Azzopardi Fisheries, the group also owns Miracle Foods and represents the SPAR supermarket brand in Malta, adding to its growing portfolio in the food industry.Arkadia currently operates supermarkets in St Julian’s, Gozo, Naxxar, Swatar and Valletta, serving a more premium customer base than SPAR and Miracle Foods. It remains unclear whether Arkadia will continue operating as a standalone brand or be integrated into the group’s existing retail operations. The sale remains subject to the fulfilment of the conditions outlined in Mizzi Organisation’s original announcement. What do you think of this move?•
