With the massed ranks of Coolmore, Godolphin and Amo Racing in behind, owner-breeder Julia Rosier and her son Charlie sealed the dream of a lifetime to have a major winner at their local track during Glorious Goodwood. The Rosiers bred Dr Rascal from their unraced Zoffany mare Little Miss Rascal, a purchase Charlie said was made “in the pub in Waterloo after a few beers, after a boozy client lunch”. It is already looking like a shrewd decision, even if it wasn't made with the clearest of heads. He continued, “She was in training with Tom Ward but she never ran for us and we decided to make her into a mare when we decided to go over to the breeding side. Her first foal was Miss Rascal, who came fifth in the Queen Mary and sadly never raced again. It was very exciting. Now we've got Dr Rascal, who's by probably the most unsexy stallion that there is in Sottsass. I think we've got the fastest Sottsass ever.”Sottsass, who left Coolmore for Japan's Shizunai Stallion Station two years ago, may be “unsexy” from a commercial viewpoint but he did win an Arc and a Prix du Jockey Club – ironically in the colours of Peter Brant, which were also carried by Dr Rascal's runner-up Haffner (Justify). And from an owner-breeder's point of view, the commercial acceptability of a sire matters not a jot if he can get you a racehorse. In the unbeaten G2 Coral Vintage Stakes winner Dr Rascal, the Rosiers look to have a high-calibre colt on their hands. “They wanted to buy him yesterday,” said Julia Rosier, shaking her head at the idea of the unidentified buyer attempting to whisk her dream horse away from her. “It's so exciting because I've been a member of Goodwood for years and I've always wanted to breed a horse who would do well here. And I have actually had a lot of horses but not one like this.”The Rosiers keep their five broodmares at Trinity Park Stud and were full of praise for Becky Marsh, who runs the stud.“Ever since this horse was born, Becky has been saying that he is something special,” Julia added. Dr Rascal was the first Glorious Goodwood winner for jockey Kaiya Fraser Bloodstock agent Matt Coleman is also involved in the Rosiers' breeding operation and said, “They turned down some serious money for the horse after Ascot but ever since I've known Julia all she has ever said is that she wants to have a winner at Glorious Goodwood.”As well as Dr Rascal's trainer Oliver Cole, the Rosiers have their nine horses in training split between George Boughey, George Scott and Jack Morland in Newmarket, with their homebreds all carrying the 'Rascal' tag in their names. Dr Rascal has now won all three of his starts, including after he got loose at Ascot when jockey Kaiya Fraser was dragged to the ground in the teeth of a rival horse behind the stalls. Cole indicated that he will look to the G1 Dewhurst Stakes with the great grandson of Jacqueline Quest (Rock Of Gibraltar), who finished first past the post in the 1,000 Guineas of 2010 only to be demoted to second in the stewards' room. At stud, her five black-type performers include Godolphin's G1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf winner Line Of Duty (Galileo), a full-brother to Dr Rascal's granddam Hibiscus. Charlie Rosier added, “My mum and I have been doing this for a long time together. It's very emotional for us actually. It's magical.”It's also a good excuse for another boozy lunch.
