Multiple Group/Grade I hero Magnitude (Not This Time) completed his final prep for the GI Whitney Stakes Saturday morning on the Oklahoma training track, and left his connections in high spirits after the breeze.Out to work five furlongs for trainer Steve Asmussen, the Winchell Thoroughbreds colorbearer was timed in a bullet 1:00.70 by NYRA clockers (the co-best of 20 at the distance). He worked in company with GSW Tiztastic (Tiz the Law), who is also nominated for the Whitney, and who was timed in 1:00.70 as well. Winchell Thoroughbreds co-owns last year's GII Louisiana Derby victor with Mrs. John Magnier, Michael Tabor, and Derrick Smith.“I thought Magnitude went beautifully,” Asmussen said. “Obviously, we are extremely excited about the Whitney and the opportunity it is. We love how he is going into it.”As to whether or not Tiztastic goes, Asmussen left that up in the air until after he spoke to Ron Winchell [of Winchell Thoroughbreds], saying, “I'll speak with Ron later today. I'll see what he wants to do. Who's to say, we'll see how he's feeling, but obviously Tiztastic has put in some really good works and he is a pretty accomplished horse himself. Working four panels over the main track in a bullet :47.37, and galloping out five furlongs in 1:00 flat, as timed by NYRA clockers, the son of the late Preservationist was ridden by jockey Manny Franco.“It was a little difficult to see the entire thing because of the fog, but he worked really well down the stretch,” said Todd Pletcher. “Manny was pretty pleased with the work, so, overall, we are happy.”Pletcher also mentioned that Friday's GII Amsterdam Stakes victor Local Knowledge (Yaupon) emerged from the effort well after securing his first graded win, and rider John Velazquez's milestone 800th graded victory. The son of Yaupon is now under consideration for the GI H. Allen Jerkens Memorial Aug. 29 on Travers Day.“[Local Knowledge] looked good this morning,” said Pletcher. “[The 800th graded win] was kind of a cool milestone. Hats off to Johnny. It seems like he just keeps getting better.”Antiquarian (outside) Saturday morning | Sarah Andrew Pacific Avenue Completes Final Saratoga Derby Prep, Irad Ortiz Jr. Gets CallGodolphin's G1 Tattersalls Irish 2000 Guineas-third Pacific Avenue (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) posted his final breeze for next weekend's GI Saratoga Derby, and will have Irad Ortiz Jr. in the irons for his second try against elite North American company.Having worked three times over the Oklahoma training turf since finishing a hard-luck seventh July 4 in the GI Belmont Derby, the Charlie Appleby-trainee had Ortiz Jr. along for the ride in the last two works and went in company with workmate Watching Stars (GB) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) once again Saturday morning. His stablemate started ahead of him for the five-panel breeze, but Pacific Avenue overtook his companion in the lane and galloped out strongly. NYRA clockers caught Pacific Avenue in 1:02 3/5 with Watching Stars time in 1:03 flat.“I enjoyed the turn-of-foot he gave,” said Sophie Chretien, the traveling assistant for Appleby. “He seems to be fresh, happy and enjoying what he's doing. He's recovered well from his last race. I just hope we don't get too much rain. I'm pleased with what I've seen. He's in good form.”“I had [Pacific Avenue] all winter in Dubai. He looked great [there], don't get me wrong, but now he looks like he's put more condition on muscle wise–stronger coat. He's not very tall but he looks strong and healthy.”The domestic hopefuls for the Saratoga Derby were also out, led by SW & MGSP Heeere's Johnny (Oscar Performance) for trainer Ray Handal. Cruising a half-mile in :50 flat over the Oklahoma training turf, he worked solo with Dylan Davis in the saddle. Davis will regain the mount for the Aug. 8 contest after Jamie Rodriguez replaced him for the Saranac Stakes victory when Davis took off his mounts as a precaution following a spill.“Dylan is my main guy, Jaime did a great job, and I have no problems with him, he rode a tremendous race, but I don't like losing my starting quarterback due to injury, so Dylan will go back in,” Handal said. “I have a lot of confidence with Dylan.”As for the Saturday work, Handal said, “That was a good work. The grass had some give in it, which I don't think is his favorite, and probably why he got beat two starts back on softer turf. But all in all, I think we accomplished what we needed in the work.
