NFTs. Guess you haven’t heard that one in a few years, have you? If you don’t go on X and keep seeing those God- damned monkeys in their million digital variants, you probably completely forgot that they were even a thing at one point. Ah, the stuff COVID made us do. But Ubisoft, in its infinite wisdom, kept pretending like NFTs never went away and maintained a full-blown game based on this web3 phenomenon for all these years. However, that’s not gonna last for much longer since, come October, the game is going offline for all time, while its NFT component was kill-switched this May. As PC Gamer writes, Champions Tactics: Grimoria Chronicles, Ubisoft’s NFT-based tactics game, is shutting down on Oct. 30 this year. I love how we have an image of it in our media library, a single one, and all it refers to is crypto. Image via Ubisoft “After careful consideration, we have made the decision to sunset the game,” the devs wrote on Discord. The game will remain playable until doomsday, but in-game purchases will be completely disabled, effective immediately. Those players still active in the Discord have been having a bit of a back-and-forth on whether or not the game is a scam. After all, this was a title that involved a lot of real-world money because people were allowed to mint characters as NFTs (non-fungible tokens) and then sell them on the marketplace. As one of the players explains, the game’s shutdown cost some people quite a good chunk of cash, since there are apparently wallets showing people spent anywhere between a thousand and $100,000 on Warlords during its lifespan. Others, however, believe the shutdown doesn’t amount to anything significant since mints were, apparently, free. Some even said it’s a full-blown scam, leading to a separate argument where they posed the philosophical dilemma of: “Is every Web3 game that is shut a scam?” Probably so, yes.
