NEW KENT, VA–The Cherie DeVaux tour made a stop in Virginia Saturday.Saddling Supercharger (Constitution) for his stakes debut in the GII Secretariat Stakes at Colonial Downs, this year's GI Kentucky Derby and GI Belmont Stakes-winning trainer cheered the C R K Stable runner to a come-from-behind win.“There seemed to be a lot of speed signed on,” DeVaux said after the race. “That doesn't always materialize. But he also got out of the gate better this race and had better tactical position than he usually has.”Debuted late in his 2-year-old season, Supercharger took four starts to break his maiden, finally doing so at Churchill Downs going 1 1/8 miles May 9. Brought right back over course and distance against allowance horses June 18, the favorite that day showed improvement despite breaking slowly, again coming from the back to win by 1 1/4 lengths.DeVaux had the Secretariat targeted on the calendar for his step into stakes company from there.“This was the one that we circled for him,” DeVaux said. “Saratoga races are always really tough. We were looking at the [GII National Museum of Racing] Hall of Fame Stakes Aug. 7, as my father-in-law, John Shirreffs, is being inducted. But the mile is just a bit too short for him, so made more sense [to be here].”Supercharger took plenty of money at 3-1 from a crowd that enthusiastically welcomed DeVaux on the walk from the paddock to the track. Finally clean from the gate, albeit after a brief stutter step, the son of Constitution let the speed go in front of him and settled nicely against the fence under jockey Manny Franco with one lap to run. Paced by a front group led by Conducted (Mendelssohn), the field strung out into the backstretch and Supercharger found himself a solo sixth and well off the speed.Conducted opened up a several-length gap through the half in :47.68 but things began to get more compact with the front seven all running together around the far turn. Still last of that group, Supercharger tipped outside and got rolling, though he still had plenty of work to do even into the final furlong. Under a sustained drive in a joint move with Infiltrate (Oscar Performance), Supercharger found an extra gear in the shadow of the wire and pushed ahead, winning narrowly ahead of a photo finish.“It was Manny [Franco's] first time on him, but these guys at the top level, like Manny and others, it's seamless when they get on,” DeVaux complimented the ride. “They do their homework, they listen to feedback and they execute it perfectly.”The win validated DeVaux's faith in her colt so seems set for bigger things to come.“We kind of thought about the [GI] Saratoga Derby, but C R K Stables has Remember Mamba in there,” DeVaux said. “So from a developmental standpoint, it just made sense to come here and then maybe try for something bigger next time.”Pedigree Note:The 44th graded stakes winner for his sire, Supercharger is the first and only foal out of She's Our Charm, a graded stakes-placed full-sister to young Spendthrift Farm stallion Rock Your World (Candy Ride {Arg}). Mayberry Farm, bloodstock agent for C R K Stable, went to $225,000 to acquire Supercharger as a yearling at Keeneland in 2024. She's Our Charm placed on the turf in the GIII Robert J. Frankel Stakes.
