Dokta Brain has opened up about the realities of songwriting, revealing that coming up with a great song title is the most difficult part of his creative process. Despite having penned numerous hit songs for some of Uganda’s biggest artists, he says the journey always begins with finding the perfect title.Speaking to Mbu, Dokta Brain explained that once he comes up with an outstanding title, he already considers the song halfway complete, even if it takes years to finish writing it.The hardest thing for me is getting a good title. Once I have a title, even if it takes five years, I count it as a song. If the title is outstanding, I feel like that’s a song already and in my mind I know I have a song to write. Once I have a title, it means I can gather information.Beyond the writing process, Dokta Brain said another major challenge is finding enough clients to buy the songs he creates. He noted that he writes music at a very fast pace and believes he could earn significantly more if there were enough buyers. Instead, songwriters are often forced to sell their work at lower prices, including to upcoming musicians, simply because demand is limited. What makes us sell a song for less even to upcoming musicians is because you can get like three clients. For a songwriter to make it, you need at least five songs a year. Why I chose Songwriting – Dokta Brain explains the balance between writing and singingThe songwriter also shed light on the financial realities of the profession, revealing that many emerging songwriters charge between Shs1 million and Shs1.5 million per song. According to him, even writing a handful of successful songs is rarely enough to sustain a songwriter throughout the year.Dokta Brain further pointed to the limited earning opportunities available to Ugandan songwriters compared to their counterparts in the global Afrobeats industry. He noted that while international songwriters often receive recognition and continue earning royalties when their work succeeds, Ugandan songwriters rarely enjoy the same level of credit or long-term financial rewards. The post Dokta Brain reveals song titles are the hardest part of songwriting appeared first on MBU.
