The San Francisco 49ers have made an intense start to training camp.Running back Jordan James suffered a fractured rib during a drill in Monday’s session before things quickly escalated at the end of the week.It has been a fiery start to 49ers training campGettyIn mic’d-up footage released on social media, linebacker Fred Warner appeared to land a punch on James in the ribs in an attempt to stop him in his tracks and force a fumble. While it isn’t clear if Warner’s honest attempt at the ball caused the injury, offensive line coach Chris Foerster, who is acting as head coach with Kyle Shanahan recovering from a mid-July car crash, confirmed James had a fractured rib due to overaggressive defense and will now be out of action.“It’s one of those perfect storms,” Foerster said. “I think (James) saw the punch coming. There was time to see it, so he tried to do something to make him miss. I think that’s what caused the broken rib.“So, he’ll be back as soon as he can with the rib,” he went on.“A lot of times it’s tolerate. Sometimes it heals faster or slower. So, I think it’s hard to put a definite time frame on. It was a combination of the punch out. It’s the punch out with the spin. It’s one of those perfect storms. You punch out, you hit the ball. They don’t miss the ball very much. But if all of a sudden when he goes to the ball, you move, all of a sudden something else is there. And I think he saw the punch coming. There was time to see it and so he tried to do something to make him miss. I think that’s what caused it to happen.”Christian McCaffrey involved in 10-men scuffle at 49ers campOn Wednesday, Brad Graham from the SF Niners YouTube channel pointed out that Warner wasn’t punching at the ball anymore, instead making a show of not punching the ball, perhaps because he knew he might have inadvertently hurt his teammate.Things escalated further on Friday when the 49ers put on pads for the first time and Dre Greenlaw and Christian McCaffrey got into it.“Greenlaw shoved McCaffrey to the ground after a catch near the sideline. CMC got up and shoved Greenlaw, who then restrained himself and backed off,” 49ers reporter David Lombardi posted on X.Five plays after Greenlaw shoved the Niners’ star running back, Warner was back at it again, barking at tight end Jake Tonges, which then set off a mini-scuffle.Warner grabbed Colton McKivitz’ facemask before Greenlaw tackled him from behind in a scrum that included more than ten Niners players.McCaffery insisted there is no bad blood, and Greenlaw is his ‘favorite’ player in the NFLGettyView Tweet: https://t.co/uLk5tNh4syHowever, after tempers had cooled, CMC was quick to downplay the exchange with Greenlaw, insisting that it was all love between the pair.“Real quick, Dre is my favorite football player in the NFL,” McCaffrey said Friday after practice. “He has been for a long time, and it’s because of stuff like that. Camp is so fun man … We get to play a little kids game for a living. “The same way you fight with your brothers as kids, sometimes you get into scuffles with your teammates.“He’s a guy that I’m glad just stopped at the pushing, he’s a guy if you have to, you might have to, but that’s not my first pick for guys I want to fight.”Foerster also didn’t appear to be too concerned by the intense nature of practice.“Your first day of pads. Everybody’s trying to set the tempo, set the tone. Things happen,” Foerster said.“Obviously you don’t want it to happen every day, but I don’t think it’s any more than a Day 1 issue.”Both Greenlaw and McCaffrey will be crucial pieces of San Francisco’s 2026 campaign.Foerster put it down to the players being excited to get back out thereGettyMcCaffery produced a stellar 2025 campaign, rushing for 1,202 yards and 10 touchdowns. He also added 924 yards and seven touchdowns through the air.2026 will be Greenlaw’s second stint with the franchise after his release from Denver Broncos.Despite signing a three-year deal with Denver, Greenlaw played in just eight games as injuries and suspension marred his time there. The injury-ravaged 49ers limped to the NFC Divisional Round of the 2025 playoffs but were comfortably beaten by eventual Super Bowl champions Seattle Seahawks.Injuries are still a major problem, with offseason addition Christian Kirk picking up a calf injury, and former first-round pick Ricky Pearsall dealing with knee swelling that is a linked to the PCL injury he suffered in 2025.“Stepping out of the rules of the game to do anything, whether it be holding, fighting, pass interference, all those things, there’s no place for them,” Foerster added. The Niners will be hoping 2026 is a healthier seasonGetty“You’ve got to practice like you’re going to play the games. If I have a drill that doesn’t match the game, what am I doing? I’m wasting time. “Fights are a waste of time and energy. An absolute waste of time and energy.”As a result of the injuries, the Niners have been forced to bring back wide receiver Deebo Samuel on a one-year deal worth up to $7 million.Foerster will be hoping the feisty start to training camp settles down and there will be no further injuries before the 49ers step out onto the field against the Los Angeles Rams in a Week 1 at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground in Australia.
