Arsenal fans have been warned not to get carried away in the club’s pursuit of Vinicius Junior.The Brazil superstar continues to be linked with a move to North London amid uncertainty surrounding his Real Madrid future.Vinicius joined Real Madrid in 2018, but his future at the Bernabeu remains unclearGettytalkSPORT understands there remains a standoff between Vinicius and Madrid over a new contract and that the Gunners are very much interested.Some reports have gone as far as to say Arsenal are ready to strike personal terms with the 26-year-old if he decides not to extend his contract in Spain.talkSPORT reported last week that the Gunners were weighing up an approach for Vinicius though viewed him as an option rather than their top target.Vinicius ‘trying to up the ante’And talkSPORT’s Rory Jennings has suggested the transfer would be “the biggest signing in Premier League history” were it to go through.Conversely, Transfer Insiders host Rickie Haywood-Williams believes the situation could be a huge misdirection.“I think this is the biggest red herring in history in terms of live transfers,” he said on talkSPORT. “Because I feel like Vinicius Jr has been trying to get a new contract at Real Madrid for the last couple of years.“In that time, they’ve signed [Kylian] Mbappe – Mbappe is on incredible money and he [Vinicius] obviously is going to want parity with that or somewhere close, and I think he’s using the Premier League as a bit of a bargaining chip to try and up the ante on his money, to try and get a bigger contract.“What do you reckon?” he posed to co-host Dan Bardell, who responded: “Surely, though, despite the Arsenal interest, surely he’s going to get a big contract anyway – because they’re [Madrid] not going to let him run down his contract and go for a free.“I think they’ve said – it’s quite well known – that if he doesn’t sign a contract this summer, they will look to sell him and it would still be an incredible amount of money.”Vinicius has just one year left to run on his deal at the Bernabeu, meaning he would be available on a free transfer next summer.Vinicius recorded five goal contributions for Brazil at this summer’s World CupGettyA hefty price tagMadrid signed the 26-year-old from Flamengo back in 2018 for a reported £39m.Transfermarkt currently values the two-time Champions League winner at almost £120m.Indeed, South American football expert Jon Cotterill recently told talkSPORT Arsenal would have to be prepared to pay more than £100m to land Vinicius.The Gunners have only ever spent that kind of money on a player once before, signing Declan Rice for £105m from West Ham three years ago.As things stand, Arsenal appear to be the only candidates to secure Vinicius’ services in the event he turns down a new deal at Madrid.Liverpool were offered the chance to sign him earlier this summer but decided against pursuing a move.
