A 49-year-old man who admitted threatening to shoot Prime Minister Robert Abela and former Prime Minister Joseph Muscat after sending alarming messages to PN leader Alex Borg has been granted bail under strict conditions.The court heard that Abdullah Buttigieg, from Pietà, first sent Borg text messages saying he desperately needed help and warning that if he did not receive it, “all of Malta will hear about me.”Concerned by the messages, Borg asked his personal assistant to contact the man as reported by Times of Malta.During the call, Buttigieg reportedly said he was struggling to provide for his eight children amid the rising cost of living and claimed he intended to go to Marsa, obtain a gun and shoot both Abela and Muscat.Borg and his assistant immediately reported the threats to the police, who quickly identified Buttigieg before searching his home and seizing his phone and other electronic devices.He was subsequently charged with several offences, including making violent threats, misuse of electronic equipment and extortion.Appearing before Magistrate Kevan Azzopardi, Buttigieg pleaded guilty to the charges.His lawyers told the court that he wished to offer an unconditional apology to Abela, Muscat and Borg, insisting he never intended to carry out the threats and deeply regretted what he had said.The defence also told the court that Buttigieg wanted to express his appreciation for the work carried out by all three public figures.While prosecutors opposed bail, arguing there was a risk of further offences, the court ultimately granted the request.As part of the bail conditions, Buttigieg must not contact any of the people he threatened or their relatives, must wear an electronic monitoring tag, and has also been placed under a probation order requiring treatment for alcohol dependency.The court also ordered the preparation of a pre-sentencing report ahead of sentencing.Superintendent Godwin Scerri and Inspector Sarah Zerafa led the prosecution.Lawyers Franco Debono and Marion Camilleri represented the defendant. •
