A woman from the Philadelphia area says a routine lunch at a chain restaurant took an unexpected turn after a server allegedly refused to accept her $50 bill, declined to return it, and threatened to call police. The incident comes from TikTok creator Bridget Goes (@bridgetgoes), whose video includes the text overlay, “Did a waitress try to scam me?” Bridget’s TikTok bio identifies her as being from the South Jersey and Philadelphia area. According to Bridget, everything about the meal seemed ordinary until it came time to pay the roughly $35 check. Bridget said she offered a $50 bill. She alleged that the waitress took the $50 bill, then returned moments later asking her to use a different payment method. “She comes back and says, ‘Do you have a different payment method? I can’t accept the fifty,” Bridget recalled. She said she assumed the restaurant did not accept $50 bills, so she asked for the bill to be returned so she could pay with a credit card instead. Then Bridget alleged the waitress refused “She said I just can’t accept it,” Bridget explained in her post. “She says, ‘Well, like, I can’t give back counterfeit bills,’ noting it’s against restaurant policy. Bridget said she immediately questioned whether the waitress believed the bill was fake. “So I said, what do you mean counterfeit? Are you saying that my 50 was counterfeit?” she recalled asking. According to Bridget, the waitress repeated that she could not return “counterfeit bills,” demanded another payment method, and warned that she would call the police if Bridget refused. “So I said, call the police, because I want the police to come and verify that my money is real,” Bridget said. “Like, I’m not walking away without my $50.” @bridgetgoes i am literally in disbelief right now i was trying to finish editing a video that’s overdue to post and now i am perplexed at this whole situation. any restaurant owners or waiters/waitresses please chime in thank you #waiter #waitress #tipping #restaurant #storytime was this a scam gone wrong like WHAT ♬ original sound – Bridget Goes Bridget then said the exchange caught the attention of a manager who overheard her telling the waitress to call the police. When he approached, Bridget said the waitress’s demeanor changed dramatically. “She goes, like, pale. Like, it’s like all the blood drains from her face,” Bridget said. According to Bridget, the manager separated the two and later returned to hear her account of what happened. After listening to the story twice, she said he disappeared for several minutes before returning with both her $50 bill and the restaurant check. “He says, ‘I’m so sorry for your experience today,'” and then comped the check, Bridget recalled. She said she left the restaurant with her money and without paying for the meal, but remained confused about what had happened. “Was the waitress trying to scam me? Like, keep the fifty?” she asked viewers. Viewers debate what happened Federal guidance instructs businesses and financial institutions that suspect a bill is counterfeit to retain the note and report it to law enforcement or the U.S. Secret Service rather than return it to circulation. If the bill is later determined to be genuine, the Secret Service can return it to the submitting business. However, the available federal guidance does not establish how every retail business must handle an in-store customer interaction. Many commenters speculated about the encounter, although none offered proof that a scam had actually occurred. “If this was a scam i was running, I’d at least have a fake $50 on me to ‘prove it was fake’ lol,” one viewer wrote. Another commented, “She definitely gave him a different story which is why he looked at you weird after hearing the story twice because she definitely was trying to scam you.” Others urged caution before assuming bad intent. “To provide a nicer perspective, I’ve accidentally accused ppl of using counterfeit cash bc I thought the counterfeit marker was supposed to be clear and I saw a wet line,” another commenter shared.
