The bitter end of Destiny 2 has been spelled out for quite some time, but it’s never felt more “over” than it does today. As someone who was a part of the Destiny community from near its beginnings, I’m of the opinion of many that YouTuber Datto was one of the best among us. His commentaries, live streams, and raid guides helped keep the community together and going for some time. Image via Bungie And now, with Destiny 2’s content schedule coming to a close as turmoil continues behind the scenes at Bungie as the studio attempts to salvage Marathon, Datto is officially done. Datto Does Destiny has become “Datto Did Destiny,” and now the game feels truly dead somehow. “As of now, August 18th will be my last day as ‘Datto Does Destiny,'” he said today on Twitter/X. “I plan on retiring from the game and content creation for the game. Deadlock will be my new home going into the future (along with variety). I’ll have more to say when we get closer to the 18th.” I personally moved on from Destiny a while ago, and the shuffling at Bungie only solidified my stance on not coming back for the big update last month, along with the fact that friends stopped playing a while ago. But Datto moving on signals a ceremonious, true ending for many, myself included. And judging by the myriad of thankful and emotional replies to his post, most Destiny players involved within the community feel the same way: sadness that it’s all over, but grateful that we shared the time along the way with people like Datto as a steward through it all. I met Datto a couple of times throughout a few in-person events many years ago, and he was always a very nice person, like the majority of people I met through the game. I’ve raided and played all sorts of Strikes and story missions with friends I made over the years, and that’s a similar story for many. And I think that’s why this all sucks so much, beyond one of our favorite games ending its content updates. Datto was one of Destiny’s earliest content creation stars way back in 2014, so seeing him hang up the Titan Mark for good is upsetting for those of us who have been involved in the community for a long time. But maybe now people can all really move on with their lives as opposed to hanging on for old time’s sake. Or not. The game is still there to play, if you want to do so. But it will never feel the same again, nor will it have actual reasons to come back beyond the nostalgia of time lost.
