Amnesia: The Dark Descent is hands down one of the best horror games of all time. It makes use of the classic video game trope—amnesia, get it?—to propel your exploration of a decrepit German castle, feeding you only as much information as it has to while pitting you against your own mind. It’s a brilliant title and one that’s had a tremendous impact on pop culture, especially while it was still fresh and new. It’s what launched PewDiePie’s career, after all, and as we all know, that alone had a lot of ramifications down the line. Frictional Games released other entries and made an entire franchise out of it, but none of them ever struck the same way as TDD. So it’s now getting a “new version,” apparently, whatever that means. A Reddit user, perusing annual reports of video game companies for no particular reason, happened upon Frictional Games’ 2025 report, where the studio wrote that it’s apparently planning to put out this supposed new version of this classic horror title. What exactly this new version is remains completely unknown, though it could very well be a remake or a remaster. New version of Amnesia the Dark Descent in 2026? byu/CarlZzZoneNnn inAmnesia What’s kept The Dark Descent going for so long now is its incredibly rich library of custom campaigns and maps that players can download and play after they’ve beaten the main story, but whenever I come back to it, I do think it could use a fresh coat of paint. However, the physics and lighting are so perfect that encroaching on them would have to be done with immense care and precision, something I don’t trust any modern studio to do. I know it’s been 15 years since The Dark Descent came out, but it’s a timeless masterpiece for a reason. If Frictional just decides to update it for modern systems to make it run better on our lightspeed PCs, then that’s fine, I guess, but it’d be a damn shame for the game to receive the same treatment as so many “new versions” that eventually get the original delisted from Steam and other storefronts. I’m being pessimistic, though, so we’ll see once this updated Amnesia: The Dark Descent actually comes out. Now’s a great time to buy the original. 0The post A ‘new version’ of the best Amnesia game is supposedly coming by the end of this year appeared first on Destructoid.
