SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY — The only way Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott could have gotten to his office at the Oklahoma Training Track Wednesday morning was by boat.The area outside his office was surrounded by water after four inches of rain fell in the area Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. The monsoon-like scenes all over Saratoga Race Course forced officials of the New York Racing Association to cancel the eight-race card scheduled for Wednesday.“I was trying to get into the Travers Canoe they gave me but it's only a model size and I couldn't fit into it,” Mott who won the 2025 Travers last year with Sovereignty (Into Mischief) cracked Wednesday.He said he never made it to his office because he couldn't get through the lake that was growing, seemingly by the minute.None of the horses in his care went to the track to train on this nasty morning. With the way the weather was playing–it was scheduled to rain for the rest of the day–it seemed to Mott an easy call to cancel.“I don't think anyone was going to have any fun at the races today,” he said.The only horse Mott had entered on Wednesday–his birthday–was 'TDN Rising Star' presented by Hagyard Chief Wallabee (Constitution), the 4-5 morning line for the $150,00 Listed Curlin Stakes. That race has now been rescheduled for Sunday. Mott said he re-entered the colt for the 1/18-mile Curlin, which originally had a field of six.“They (racing office) told me the field was going to get bigger,” Mott said.In addition to the Curlin, NYRA announced that Thursday's featured GII, $250,000 Glens Falls, a 1 1/2-mile race on the inner turf, would also be redrawn and moved to Sunday. Eleven races will be run on Sunday while Thursday's card is now scheduled to have eight races.The three other grass races for Thursday–the second, fifth and ninth–will be run on the main track.Traffic on the main track and Oklahoma Training Track was sparse as heavy rain continued to fall early Wednesday morning.Trainer Brad Cox used both tracks to train his horses, including Commandment (Into Mischief), the GI Belmont Stakes runner-up, who was on the main.“We aren't doing that much,” Cox said after he and his son Blake, his assistant, watched a few of their horses train on the Oklahoma. “They all seem to be doing fine.”As far as the cancellation goes, Cox, who had horses entered in three races Wednesday, said he was fine with it.“The concern is that there is no break (from the rain),” he said. “It looks like it's going to be here all day. It's up to management and we live with the decision that is made.”The last time a full card at Saratoga was cancelled because of the rain was Aug. 9, 2024, when Tropical Storm Debby brought heavy rain and wind to the area and NYRA called off a 10-race card.Trainer George Weaver, standing under cover watching his horses train on the Oklahoma, was surprised there was so much rain in such a short time. He had his horses training like they normally would.“If horses are on top of a race, they need to train” Weaver said. “It's supposed to rain the next couple of days; what are you going to do?Training on the main track ended at 9 a.m., an hour earlier than usual due to the conditions. At the Oklahoma, it was over at 9:30 a.m., some 30 minutes earlier.Weaver had one horse entered on Wednesday's card, True Legend (Honest Mischief), in the fourth race.
