My (then) 45-year old sister had a bone marrow transplant. I was her primary caregiver and was at the hospital every single day of the 2-1/2 months she was there until she passed away from complications. If she had made it out of the hospital, there’s no way in hell I would have left her care to some unpaid rando off the street. Hell, I didn’t even leave her care 100% to the professionals at the hospital. (No, I didn’t interfere, but I looked out for her in ways they simply couldn’t, like bathing her, bringing her water, and countless other things to maintain her dignity.) It’s hard, heartbreaking work, but I wouldn’t trade a single second of it. This whole post screams to me of someone who couldn’t give a rat’s ass about this “elderly gentleman,” but wants it to appear that they do.
