SPOILERS are ahead for Lucky through Episode 4 “Too Close To See It.” You can stream the series with an Apple TV subscription.It’s been a blast to watch Anya Taylor-Joy get into a lot of trouble on Lucky, the latest book-to-screen adaptation from Hello Sunshine. But, wow, did the midseason episode take things in a completely new direction! Now, I need to do a deep dive and share what I learned from the show’s leads when I talked to them about the episode. Let’s Talk About That Lucky Twist So, the big thing we learn in Episode 4 is that Lucky’s husband Cary is very much alive...but there's more to it. He apparently had a different reason for leaving her high and dry than I expected. According to him, he actually thought he was protecting her by leaving with the money. He had initially planned to give it back to his mother, but when he arrived at the spot to meet her, he had a change of heart and decided to take the $10 million. Regarding Lucky, he apparently had faith that she would find him unscathed and his mom would never try to come after her. Come on, dude! In Episode 1, I thought Cary was just a horrible husband in the classically selfish “I want the money for myself way”. But as it turns out, he’s just really not very bright. If we are to believe his story wasn’t completely nonsense, he must have really needed to lean on Lucky all these years, because what a horrible, horrible plan! But then the whole episode ended with Cary’s death, and I’m just beside myself about the whole reunion. Poor girl. (Image credit: Apple TV )What Anya Taylor-Joy And Drew Starkey Told Me About It When Lucky and Cary reunite in Episode 4, things instantly get quite tense in that beach house. Here’s what Drew Starkey had to say about the reveal in our interview: It's always a great challenge when a character has done something that's seemingly kind of unforgivable. And then, your job is to convince the person in front of you that what I've done is right. I loved the challenge of it. And then, having a great collaborator and a brilliant scene partner [in Anya]. I don't have to do much of the heavy lifting. She's right there with me.He was rather nice to his character, don’t you think? I can imagine their scenes were interesting to film, especially since we barely see much of the couple prior to the episode. As Taylor-Joy added about her first TV show since Queen’s Gambit: I think because we were both aware that you meet these characters in a fever dream, and then he becomes a ghost for a whole section, we really had a lot of life to fill in. So that by the time these two people, again, spoiler alert, but get back together again, you're feeling the weight of their shared history and not just the moment that you've witnessed on screen, because otherwise it just doesn't hit the way that you want it to. They did an incredible job of making it all believable, but what a shocking episode. Where will things go from here? We’ll have to wait and see as Lucky continues to drop new episodes on the 2026 TV schedule on Wednesdays.
