Being a part of a TV series with a 14-season run is a rare feat, but even then, Tom Selleck wasn’t ready to let go of his CBS drama Blue Bloods. Over nearly 300 episodes, the story followed the professional and personal lives of the Reagans, a family in New York who were all working in different positions of law enforcement together to solve crimes and protect the city from danger. It was hugely popular among viewers, and the cast was on board to return, but ultimately the series ended in 2024. Ted Danson recently joined Tom Selleck for a live discussion about the Reagan family patriarch’s memoir, You Never Know, and turned the conversation into an episode of his perfectly titled podcast, Where Everybody Knows Your Name. During the career-spanning chat, talk naturally turned to Blue Bloods and the actor known to fans across generations as Thomas Magnum on the hit TV series Magnum, P.I. explained that he, along with his co-stars, had taken pay cuts to keep the show going, but it ultimately didn’t return despite any and all efforts. He said: The real truth to that is, in the last year … everybody wanted to come back. We’d already taken a 25 percent cut in salary. We’d already done all sorts of things to keep the show going. It was very frustrating because out of the top 100 shows on broadcast television, Blue Bloods was No. 6 in our 15th year. Nobody wanted to leave. Everybody was gonna stay on.We’re used to hearing about a cast that scored a major pay raise, so getting everyone to agree to stay on board with a pay cut would be a challenge under any circumstances. But the Blue Bloods cast was close and didn’t want to say goodbye to their time together. It also would have been impossible to replace any of the Reagan family members with another actor, so they had to make the decision as a group. Unfortunately, it just ended up not being enough. As the actor at the top of the call sheet, it was important to Selleck, in the leadership role, to maintain an atmosphere on set that everyone would want to be in and continue to return to. He set the bar, and Donnie Wahlberg, Bridget Moynahan, and Will Estes continued to meet it. Selleck said: Blue Bloods was a labor of love, I think, for everybody … Maybe people don’t realize, but a lot of shows become miserable to work on. You get a lot of egos and ‘I’m not coming out of my dressing room until he’s coming out’ … and it’s miserable. It’s absolutely miserable … Blue Bloods was never that.Even though the O.G. series is gone, distraught fans over Blue Bloods’ cancellation can rest assured that the Reagans are not forgotten. CBS made the decision to move forward with the critically acclaimed spin-off series Boston Blue, following Wahlberg’s Danny Reagan as he partners with Detective Lena Silver (Sonequa Martin-Green) at the Boston PD. With as at home as he seems in Beantown, it’s funny to think that the NKOTB member was almost sent to Texas for a different Blue Bloods spinoff, but sometimes things work out differently for a reason. A new city, new cops, and a twist on the Reagan family dinners provide a fresh feel while keeping the door open for familiar characters to pop up. Boston Blue will be returning to the 2026 TV schedule this fall, with a second season full of mysteries and continued potential for Blue Bloods cameos.
