Those words, delivered at the end of the Spider-Man: Brand New Day credits, appear like an old-school promise of more adventure during the fade out of James Bond movies of yore. But their placement in a Marvel Studios movie, particularly on the precipice of what might be the most important MCU flick of the decade, Avengers: Doomsday, takes on a special significance during the final minutes of Spider-Man: Brand New Day.Spidey will return, alright, but when, where, and in what form—or even what variant, you might say—is all intentionally left vague during the Spider-Man: Brand New Day end credits. But for those who stick all the way to the bitter end of Brand New Day‘s closing titles, the final scene is less a live-action denouement than it is an ominous brain teaser.Earlier in the movie, we learn that good ol’ Ned Leeds (Jacob Batalon) might have had his memory of Peter Parker wiped years ago, but his unabashed love for the guy who slings web never abated. No longer remembering Spider-Man’s secret identity, he has become obsessed with the wallcrawler, tracking his sightings and movements across New York City. He’s determined to figure out if it was more than just coincidence when the masked vigilante saved his and other classmates’ lives in Washington D.C. and Europe.As a consequence, he built a Spidey tracker that is able to trace the Web-Head’s movements and DNA signature across great distances. And as we learn during Brand New Day’s post-credits scene, we mean really great distances. In fact, the final shot of the film is not of Holland, Batalon, or Zendaya as the perennially out of reach MJ. It’s of that Spidey tracker screen picking up a signal for a Spider-Man in space. And we mean deep space as the tracker pinpoints a Web-Head past the orbit of the moon and essentially on the second star to the right and straight on to morning. What could it mean?!Spider-Man Will Return… But Which One?So Peter Parker will return, but in what shape or form remains to be seen. The foreboding text “Spider-Man Will Return” not so coincidentally resembles the triumvirate of Avengers: Doomsday teasers we received last December. In each one, either Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers, Chris Hemsworth’s Thor, or James Marsden and the other O.G. X-Men cast would briefly appear along with the text, “[Insert Character] Will Return in Avengers: Doomsday.”It is top shelf Marvel Studios marketing, and so is the way Brand New Day deliberately evokes that promise while still not confirming Spidey is returning in Doomsday. Yet if we had to guess, that is exactly what they’re setting up, if not in the way you’d expect.As established during the post-credits scene of last year’s Thunderbolts*, to hop between realities in the multiverse sometimes requires you to enter from the stars above. Indeed, during that post-credits scene, which was so much a teaser for Doomsday that it was shot on the Avengers set by directors Joe and Anthony Russo, we learn that Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, and all the rest lineup from Fantastic Four: First Steps will be arriving in the MCU proper (aka the “sacred timeline”) by way of a space shuttle crashing from orbit.So it seems intentionally set up for another Spider-Man besides Holland to be heading back our way in the forthcoming Avengers movies. While no Spider-Man actor has been confirmed to appear in either Doomsday or its fast 2027 follow-up, Avengers: Secret Wars, leaving out the most popular Marvel character seems close to impossible for this two-part event, albeit that doesn’t mean it has to be Holland himself.If we are allowed to speculate, we think the table is being set for Tobey Maguire’s return for one final bow in the raised web costume in either Doomsday or Secret Wars, if not both. In Brand New Day, Holland’s Peter deliberately reminds the audience of Maguire’s classic 2000s era Spidey by developing organic web-shooters and then stating, “Peter Two had organic webbing and he was pretty cool.”Furthermore, and perhaps most tellingly, during the recent Marvel Studios panel at San Diego Comic-Con, for the first time ever in one of Marvel’s famed Hall H panels its video sizzle reel footage of past glories wound its audience up by including Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man from the Sam Raimi trilogy, circa 2002-2007, instead of Holland’s MCU variant.Taken together, Marvel seems to be quietly revving the core fanbase to remember how much they enjoy Maguire’s Spidey because he is about to make a grand return in the upcoming finale to the multiverse shenanigans of the last six or seven years. It might seem far-fetched, but we know that Avengers: Doomsday’s titular villain is less concerned with space like Thanos than he is the multiverse and the threat of incursions. In this context, the only reason to be off-Earth is because you’re traveling to another variation on our little blue dot. And it seems that is what’s happening with some variant Spider-Man out there in the post-credits scene.
