Over 1,000 students and their families attended the 'Back to School' event, organized annually by Foothill Unity Center, at Santa Anita Park July 29 to prepare for the upcoming school year, the track announced Friday.The non-profit provided local students with an array of items and services, including free new backpacks filled with school supplies, clothing, complimentary haircuts, and a wide variety of health services with more than 20 community partners participating in the event. According to organizers, the cost of preparing a child for the school year can range from $345 to nearly $1,000. Foothill Unity Center's annual 'Back to School' event is aimed at helping to alleviate that financial pressure for local low-income families.“Every child deserves to begin the school year feeling confident, prepared, and excited to learn, said Foothill Unity Center executive director Jhoana Hirasuna. “Thanks to the incredible partnership and generosity of Santa Anita Park, along with our many sponsors, volunteers, and community partners, more than 1,000 students were able to start the school year with the supplies, clothing, and support they need to be successful.
