A Nigerian referee has come under fire for an egregious stoppage on Friday night in Lagos.The bout in question took place at the Balmoral Convention Center between former British super lightweight champion Samuel Antwi and local boxer Suleiman Jafaru.A late stoppage has been making the rounds on social mediaX @DAZNBoxingAntwi opened up as a sizeable favourite, and was on top of the action when he was knocked onto wobbly legs by a ram-rodding jab in the sixth round.The 34-year-old’s knees continued to buckle as Jafaru poured on the pressure with a flurry of hooks that sent Antwi tumbling to the canvas.Antwi managed to beat the count, but he was visibly out on his feet.Regardless, referee Constance Chinagorom allowed the action to resume, and when she did, Jafaru pounced.Jafaru backed Antwi up against the ropes and rained down an onslaught of unanswered blows as guest commentator and former European, British and Commonwealth light heavyweight champion Dan Azeez begged for the action to be waved off.“Ref, ref, ref, ref, ref, what is the referee doing? Referee?” shouted Azeez as Antwi shipped unnecessary punishment.Chinagorom eventually intervened after roughly 11 punches were absorbed, while the towel from Antwi’s corner also came in late.The comment section underneath a video of the stoppage, posted by DAZN, was filled with fans calling for the referee to be sacked.Fans call for referee to be axedA quote tweet, which received 30,000 likes, read: “This is absolutely vile. Take the licence away.”Another fan wrote: “That ref should never be allowed to ref again.
