One of EPCOT’s most elaborate rooftops is disappearing piece by piece.World Showcase has always relied on architecture as much as attractions. Its 11 country pavilions encircle a 1.3-mile promenade, using restaurants, shops, entertainment, and carefully recreated landmarks to transport guests without leaving Walt Disney World.Credit: DisneyGermany has been part of that lineup since EPCOT opened on October 1, 1982. Inspired largely by the walled Bavarian town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber, the pavilion brings together buildings and details drawn from several German regions and periods.Now, one of its most prominent structures is undergoing a substantial exterior refurbishment.Disney Strips Das Kaufhaus RoofCrews are stripping and rebuilding the steep roof of Das Kaufhaus, the large merchandise location positioned close to the entrance of the Germany Pavilion.The work is taking place across both sides of the building, although each has reached a different stage. The lower roof slopes and several dormers still retain parts of their previous patterned finish, leaving the structure caught between its familiar appearance and the refurbishment underway.The east side is further along. Shingles have been removed across the main slope and its dormers, leaving a nearly uniform brown covering interrupted by taped seams, exposed fasteners, and the first signs of replacement material.A small section of dark shingle has appeared along one dormer, suggesting reconstruction has started even as crews continue stripping other sections.Das Kaufhaus remains open during the project, allowing guests to continue entering and browsing while work proceeds overhead. The available update does not identify a completion date for the refurbishment.The building’s silhouette makes this more noticeable than a standard maintenance project. The real building stands on Münsterplatz and traces its commercial role to the 14th century, while the landmark’s current historic structure was built in 1520.Disney’s version does not reproduce the building exactly. Instead, Imagineers adapted recognizable details into the broader storybook village assembled around the pavilion’s central plaza.The EPCOT structure was originally known as the Gild Hall and housed Der Bücherwurm, a shop selling German books and artwork. It became Das Kaufhaus in 1999, with its merchandise selection changing throughout the years.Germany Pavilion Refurbishments ContinueThe roof project follows several other recent closures and repairs in the same pavilion.Der Teddybär reopened in July after a brief refurbishment, restoring its selection of toys and Steiff bears. The Germany Pavilion’s Kidcot activity station also moved inside the reopened store near its registers.In mid-July, work was also affecting the pavilion restrooms, Volkskunst, and Stein Haus. Das Kaufhaus remained available even when neighboring retail locations temporarily closed, making its continued operation during the roof refurbishment particularly useful for guests.The pavilion’s architecture is designed to feel collected rather than copied from one place.Credit: Gary Todd, FlickrAt its center stands a version of the St. George and the Dragon statue found in Rothenburg ob der Tauber. The figure sits within the Germany Pavilion’s plaza, surrounded by decorated storefronts and a clock tower featuring a glockenspiel.Beyond the shops, Germany is also home to Biergarten Restaurant, which has served guests since EPCOT’s opening day. The dining room recreates an outdoor Bavarian festival at night, combining German food with regular live musical performances.Karamell-Küche has become another major draw, producing caramel-covered treats inside the pavilion using Werther’s Original caramel. Together, these locations mean Germany functions primarily through food, retail, atmosphere, and entertainment rather than a headline ride.Roof replacements are not unprecedented around World Showcase.EPCOT’s Norway Pavilion underwent similar work at the Stave Church Gallery in 2024. Wooden shingles and weather-resistant underlayment were removed and replaced while the exhibit inside the building remained accessible to guests.Credit: DisneyFor now, the Germany Pavilion is still operating around its latest construction project.The bare roof may temporarily alter one of World Showcase’s most recognizable skylines, but the scope of the work suggests Disney is concentrating on preserving the building rather than changing its role.Once the shingles return, most guests may never notice how extensive the refurbishment became.
