A 51-year-old Estonian man who stripped naked in a public fountain in Żebbuġ after accepting a €200 bet with his friends has been handed a one-month prison sentence, suspended for one year, and a €1,000 fine.Rainer Korgesaar, who has no fixed address in Malta, pleaded guilty to offending public decency after being caught naked in the fountain at St Philip’s Square at around 11.15pm on 30th September. The court heard that the incident took place after Korgesaar had consumed a bottle of whiskey and accepted a €200 bet from his friends to strip naked in the fountain.Police were alerted to the incident following a report of a naked man in the fountain. When officers arrived at the scene, Korgesaar immediately admitted to what he had done.Magistrate Nadie Helena Vella initially adjourned the case until the afternoon before handing down a one-month prison sentence, suspended for one year, together with a €1,000 fine. The incident also prompted a reaction from Home Affairs Minister Glenn Bedingfield, who condemned the behaviour and asked the Principal Immigration Officer to consider deporting Korgesaar from Malta. In a social media post, Bedingfield insisted that such behaviour had no place in Malta, adding that the country was not a place for buffoonery.Inspector Julian Sammut prosecuted the case, while lawyer Silvan Pulis represented the accused.•
