Tony Romo arrest ‘the excuse’ to start broadcast shake up as CBS hand JJ Watt one season to prove himself

Wait 5 sec.

JJ Watt has already been given the first chance to put himself in pole position to be the new lead color analyst at CBS Sports. However that doesn’t mean he is the only contender as the starting gun was fired after Tony Romo‘s exit from the network was confirmed.Tony Romo and CBS have agreed to part waysGettyTomy Brady’s Fox contract has triggered a battle for big namesgettyOn Friday, CBS and Romo came to an agreement to part ways, this after the former Dallas Cowboys quarterback was placed on leave from his $18million a year contract following his arrest for operating a vehicle while under the influence in July..That deal still had four years to run, meaning any departure from his position as CBS Sports lead NFL analyst alongside Jim Nantz could have gotten messy. But terms were agreed on mutual parting that, according to The Athletic’s Andrew Marchand, gave CBS ‘the excuse, not the reason’ they were looking for to get out of the $180million deal Romo signed in 2020.A short CBS statement read: “CBS Sports and Tony Romo have mutually agreed to part ways. We thank Tony for his contributions over the past nine years and wish him the best moving forward.”The move immediately adds a layer of intrigue to the broadcast booth shake up likely to come at the end of the 2026 NFL season.Three-time Defensive Player of the Year Watt was elevated from his partnership with Ian Eagle to join Nantz in CBS’s No 1 booth through the first three weeks of the season. An uneasy start has seen the pair share an awkward moment or two as they build a chemistry, but Watt’s insight and energy has been praised. The pair will be together for Sunday’s high profile AFC West clash between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Las Vegas Raiders. That game is in the late window, so they’ll be plenty of eyeballs on Allegiant Stadium. As part of the Romo statement, CBS confirmed Nantz and Watt will remain as a pair for the rest of the season.Ross Tucker has stepped up to the number two booth alongside Eagle, and impressed but it’s the others contracts coming to a head that make things interesting.A high profile battle for the booths is emerginggettyGreg Olsen is the big fish, with his Fox contract – currently a relative bargain at $3million a year – set to expire at the end of this season. The former Chicago, Carolina and Seattle tight end was a runaway success in his early years in the booth but was shunted aside, and forced into a $7million a year paycut – to make way for Tom Brady and his $375million contract which started in 2023.Olsen has continued to excel in the Fox second booth but has made it clear he would like to be a No. 1 again and it’s likely the networks will make a play for him.As well as CBS, ESPN could weigh up a move for the 41-year-old as they are yet to renew the contract of Monday Night Football analyst Troy Aikman. The World Wide Leader in Sports will host their first Super Bowl in Los Angeles on February 14, 2027 and Aikman will be on the call alongside Joe Buck.Buck has already agreed a new deal worth a reported $108million, but Aikman remains in limbo.Joe Buck and Troy Aikman have worked together at Fox and ESPNGettySplitting the pair’s much-loved Monday Night Football partnership would be a risky business, having worked together for 25 years – but Olsen is seen as the belle of the broadcast booth ball and will likely have multiple offers. Also in the mix could be Luke Kuechly, who was Netflix surprise choice to be their lead analyst for their biggest ever list season of games.Having never called a primetime game, he was on the call for San Francisco 49ers and Los Angeles Rams Week 1 meeting in Australia and an impressive season would put him in the mix and CBS have already drafted him in to their coverage this season.Over at Amazon, Kirk Herbstreit – also ESPN’s lead college color announcer – this week agreed an eight figure multi-year deal, while the much criticized Al Michaels remains on year-to-year terms. It promises to be high stakes games of musical chairs across the networks, with one significant and likely very pricey wild card.Kirk Herbstreit’s Amazon deal could leave the door open for big name arrivalsTravis Kelce could make a move into the booth at the end of his last NFL seasonGettyTravis Kelce will bring the curtain down on his Hall of Fame career having committed to one more season with the Kansas City Chiefs and is likely to be a man in high demand. He already has a $100million deal in place with Amazon’s Wonderly network for his ‘New Heights’ podcast, and all the major networks would likely be interested in a deal.Whether Kelce follows his brother Jason in being part of pre and postgame, or makes the much more challenging step into the announcers booth remains to be seen.Marchand, The Athletic’s much respected sports media reporter, even threw out a wild card of the Manning brothers being used individually or as a pair in a new look ESPN set up.With everyone in the market for new talent, big names out of contract, the news away from the booth is likely to make as many headlines as those on the field.
