The Gujarat Assembly passed the Bill in the budget session in March by a majority vote after a nearly eight-hour debate.Largely based on Uttarakhand’s UCC, the new law seeks to regulate personal civil matters for Gujarat residents, such as marriage, divorce, succession, adoption and related civil affairs including live-in relationships. The law was proposed after a committee headed by former Supreme Court judge Ranjana Desai submitted a report examining its implementation in the state. The new law would legitimise live-in relationships, while making several changes to the inheritance, marriage and divorce laws. The Code will not apply to the members of Scheduled Tribes and the persons and groups of persons whose customary rights are protected under Part XXI of the Constitution.© The Indian Express Pvt LtdStay updated with the latest - Click here to follow us on InstagramAdvertisementLoading Recommendations...AdvertisementAdvertisement
