Mary Goodnight (Gun Runner) made it two straight for these connections just days after the passing of LNJ Foxwoods' Larry Roth with an eye-catching allowance victory Thursday at Woodbine.Unplaced in three starts last season, the homebred came from last to fill the third spot in a June 13 grass maiden here and rallied to break her maiden by two clear lengths July 26. Stretching out for this first go against winners, the chestnut was a handful pre-start and had to be loaded without the rider, then was allowed to find her footing at the tail of the field behind a moderate pace.Niggled along four furlongs out, Mary Goodnight began to catch the eye with a sweeping move approaching the long Woodbine straight and took over an eighth of a mile from home before skipping clear on her wrong lead to score by four lengths at odds just shy of 9-2.The Roths acquired this filly's second dam Gold Round (Ire) (Caerleon), winner of the G3 Prix Cleopatre for the Wertheimer Brothers and Criquette Head, for €520,000 at the 2012 Arqana December Sale, having already produced French Group 3 winner Goldwaki (Ire) (Dalakhani {Ire}).The in-utero purchase was named Golden Valentine (Fr) (Dalakhani {Ire}) and was trained by Freddy Head for LNJ to victory in the G3 Prix Minerve before becoming the dam of four winners, including Godolphin's G1 Futurity Trophy hero Ancient Wisdom (Fr) (Dubawi {Ire}).The latter, bred in partnership with Ecurie des Monceaux, cost €2 million at the 2022 Arqana August yearling, second to only the €2.1 million for Arc winner Sottsass's Japanese-based MGSW & MG1SP full-brother Shin Emperor (Fr).Mary Goodnight's dam, also a half-sister to LNJ Foxwoods' GSW & GISP Luck (Kitten's Joy), was second in the 2021 GIII Honeymoon Stakes for trainer Richard Mandella and the mare's most recent produce is a French-bred filly by Lope de Vega (Ire) foaled this past Apr. 5.Mary Goodnight's third dam Born Gold (Blushing Groom {Fr}) produced three-time GI Breeders' Cup Mile victress Goldikova (Ire) (Anabaa); her younger full-brother Anodin (Ire), GSW & MG1SP in France and runner-up in the 2014 Mile; and G1 Prix Vermeille winner Galikova (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}).6th-Woodbine, C$84,300, Alw (NW2L), Opt.
