I built RetroArr, a self-hosted retro TV station that turns YouTube & Archive playlists into live channels (works as an HDHomeRun tuner in Plex/Jellyfin/Emby)

Wait 5 sec.

Hey all! I’ve missed watching the cartoons and shows I grew up on, plus flipping through channels and landing on whatever cartoon was already halfway through, so I built RetroArr. It takes YouTube playlists (plus some old shows from the Internet Archive) and turns them into 90+ live channels sorted by decade and genre. Everything runs on a shared clock, so when you tune in, the show is already playing, just like real TV. (without commercials, yet(???)) A few things it does: Shows up in Plex, Jellyfin, and Emby as an HDHomeRun tuner, with a full TV guide Also gives you M3U + XMLTV if you use another player. Themed channels like Saturday morning cartoons, Nick at Nite, Fox Kids, game shows, MST3K, and G4 The Retro API automatically filters out compilations, reaction videos, and non-English dubs so channels feel like actual TV. Runs as one Docker container Supports Plugins to add more channels dynamically If you want to see what it's like, you can watch in your browser at retroarr.tv (there's a little chat too). GitHub: github.com/f00d4tehg0dz/retroarr I'd love feedback, and if you have favorite playlists or shows you want on a channel, drop them below or open a PR! Side note: I do apologize, but I used Claude to help build some of the functionality, including API filtering and removing poor content. submitted by /u/f00d4tehg0dz [link] [comments]
