Capping a day to remember at ParisLongchamp for Victorious Forever and George Scott, Caballo De Mar (Phoenix Of Spain) did what for so long this year has seemed the unthinkable and got the better of Scandinavia (Justify) to record back-to-back successes in the G1 Qatar Prix du Cadran.Having to survive an inquiry as the pair came together in the dying strides, the 6-1 second favourite, who has also won the Prix Vicomtesse Vigier and Doncaster Cup, edged home under Oisin Murphy with the 1-5 market leader a short neck back. It was 3 1/2 lengths back to Queenstown (Galileo) in third.“What an amazing performance by the horse. He was beaten two furlongs by Scandinavia at Ascot so all credit to my team at home and who travel with him, it's quite emotional,” the winning trainer said after completing a double following the exploits of the Prix Dollar winner Wimbledon Hawkeye.“He went past him easily and then Scandinavia showed himself a champion to come back. These moments are what we do it for. I'm so proud of the team.” The result underlined the quality of Meydan's Dubai Gold Cup from March, where the afternoon's Prix de Royallieu heroine Fairy Glen had denied Caballo De Mar. Caballo De Mar could be headed to Ascot now, while the runner-up is finished for the year.“I thought if there was an opportunity to beat him it was today because my horse loves it here, he was showing all the right signs and Scandinavia had a very hard race in Ireland last time,” Scott added. “We'll see how he comes out of it, but he could go to Ascot on Champions Day.”Aidan O'Brien said of Scandinavia, “He ran a great race and it's been a long season for him. The ground was a little bit on the slower side for him. Ryan said he was coming back at him. That will be him finished for the season. I was never going to go to Ascot, as the ground would definitely be gone for him by then.”Pedigree NotesCaballo De Mar is only the second but also the last foal out of Oberyn (Holy Roman Emperor), a granddaughter of the Prix Minerve winner and excellent producer Daralinsha (Empery). She is in turn out of Darazina (Labus), the fourth dam of the Aga Khan Studs luminary Daryz (Sea The Stars), while the family also features the stars Darjina (Zamindar), Almanzor (Wootton Bassett) and Darsi (Polish Precedent).Saturday, ParisLongchamp, FranceQATAR PRIX DU CADRAN-G1, €300,000, ParisLongchamp, 10-3, 4yo/up, 20fT, 4:18.94, g/s.1–CABALLO DE MAR (IRE), 128, g, 5, by Phoenix Of Spain (Ire) 1st Dam: Oberyn (Ire), by Holy Roman Emperor (Ire) 2nd Dam: Daraliya (Ire), by Kahyasi (Ire) 3rd Dam: Daralinsha, by Empery(€21,000 Wlg '21 GOFNO1; €33,000 Ylg '22 TATIRY).O-Victorious Forever; B-Barouche Stud (Ireland) Ltd; T-GeorgeScott; J-Oisin Murphy. €171,420.
