Maltese stories and familiar voices took centre stage in Morocco last week, as Malta took its place as Country of Honour at the sixth Marrakech Short Film Festival.Running from 25 to 30 September, the festival brought together filmmakers and audiences for screenings, discussions and professional exchanges across Marrakech. Malta’s dedicated programme featured nine titles, offering a snapshot of the different directions filmmakers connected to the islands are taking.Malta’s participation was spearheaded by the Consulate General of Malta in Morocco, based in Casablanca, with support from Arts Council Malta and Ċentru tal-Ilsien Malti. The Consulate drove the initiative to bring Maltese cinema to Moroccan audiences, while the supporting organisations helped bring the programme together and make the works accessible through English subtitles. The selection moved between intimate family dramas, psychological horror and animation, with films presented in Maltese and English. My Dearest Mother, directed by Michael Bonello Ghio and starring Marama Corlett and Jane Marshall, drew particularly warm reactions from audience members who spoke to Lovin Malta. Corlett’s performance and the film’s cinematography were singled out for praise. Bark focused on the human connections that can emerge from an unexpected encounter.Animation brought another side of Maltese storytelling to the programme. Filfla drew on local legend, Karamellu tar-Raħal t’Isfel presented Maltese customs through a child’s eyes, and Mr Teddy is Angry and Somewhere took audiences into worlds of childhood imagination and space. The guest-country selection also included Cookie Box, by Polish director Adam Żurawiecki, which explores domestic violence, migration and compassion. For Consul General Ivan Vassallo, the programme formed part of a wider effort to strengthen cultural ties and friendship between Malta and Morocco. The countries’ linguistic and Mediterranean connections provided a natural starting point, with the films giving audiences a more personal introduction to life and creativity in Malta. And for at least one of the participating films, the international journey is continuing almost immediately. My Dearest Mother will have its California premiere at Screamfest in Los Angeles on 10 October.•
