Peter Fury will NOT be following Ben Davison’s suit by being in Anthony Joshua’s corner for his world title fight with Tyson Fury. The British heavyweight rivals will finally lock horns in Cardiff on December 11 with the WBA ‘Super’ belt up for grabs.Tyson won the WBA, WBO and IBF heavyweight titles under his uncle Peter’s tutelage and there was a suggestion that he would be in Joshua’s corner for the Cardiff showdownNews Group Newspapers LtdAnd if Wednesday’s press conference is anything to go by, fans are truly in for a treat. In the build-up to the domestic dust-up, one shock talking point has been Joshua’s revelation that he has been in discussion with Fury’s uncle and former mentor Peter.Uncle and nephew are known to have an estranged relationship these days, despite reaching the summit of the heavyweight division together in November 2015.It was Peter who was in Tyson‘s corner when he beat Wladimir Klitschko in Dusseldorf – ending the Ukrainian’s decade of dominance as heavyweight champion. But it was their last fight together, with Fury subsequently testing positive for cocaine and battling alcohol addiction.By the time Fury returned to the ring in 2018, he had put his trust in Davison, with the duo working five times together.Though Davison was ditched in December 2019 following an unconvincing – and gruelling – points win over Otto Wallin.Davison has since been whisked in by Joshua for their second spell together, having previously led AJ into battle for three fights between 2023 and 2024.That move by the 2012 Olympic gold medallist has led Tyson to label him ‘mentally weak‘, after they initially parted ways following Joshua’s KO defeat to Daniel Dubois. Will Peter Fury be in Anthony Joshua’s corner? But unlike Davison, Peter Fury has insisted he will not be part of Team Joshua – though stressed he would be more than happy to work with him after his meeting with his nephew.Fury and Joshua have been heavyweight’s two most prominent names, and they now have the chance to stake a claim as the UK’s best in their Battle of BritainGettyTaking to X, Peter insisted his full focus in the near future is with former kickboxing star Rico Verhoeven, who is nearing a return to action after his controversial stoppage loss to Oleksandr Usyk in May for the WBC strap. He wrote: “Me and AJ spoke two months ago about advice on his skill set – really nice guy.“After his fight, anything he needs from me [would] be a pleasure.“He has a great team around him, including Team Usyk.“My focus now is Rico [Verhoeven], we start camp very soon.”What did Anthony Joshua say about Peter Fury?Having stated that Peter was ‘willing to help me’, Joshua then opened up on whether the experienced trainer had offered any words of wisdom.Joshua has turned to former Davison ahead of his WBA world title clash against FuryMark Robinson/MatchroomHe said: “Yeah, but not about Fury, but our training and our approach, how I can approach the fight.“Not sort of, ‘Fury does this,’ it was more, ‘I’ve seen what you do,’ and this is where he thinks he can improve.“It goes back to saying that everybody wants me to win, everybody’s going to tell me how to win.“But the most important person to listen to is myself at this point in my career, so I’ve got to take everything with a pinch of salt.“But what I was saying is, it wasn’t so much to [get] Ben and Peter to go to people that have worked with Fury before.“The reason why I worked with them is because they pinpoint things.”Watch Boxing on DAZN*If you click a link in this boxout, we will earn affiliate revenueSign up to DAZN to access the definitive subscription for boxing fans.Upgrade to DAZN Ultimate from just £24.99/month, guaranteeing access to 185+ fights annually, a minimum of 12 pay-per-views at no extra cost, as well as every Lega Serie A match and other elite football access.Alternatively, DAZN Standard is just £15.99/month, with the caveat you will have to pay for pay-per-view events.Click here to sign up.
