Sliema Residents Sound Alarm Over Restaurant’s ‘Take-Over’ Of Public Space

Wait 5 sec.

Sliema residents are calling for urgent action over what they claim is the take-over of public land by a new restaurant at the corner of Annunciation Street and the Ferries. The Sliema Residents Association said workers were seen installing an awning that stretches across the full width of the pavement, while paving stones were also allegedly being cemented beyond the pavement and onto the road. The association claims the works amount to an illegal alteration of the street alignment, while raising concerns about the amount of public space being occupied by commercial establishments.Residents also warned that the structure could obstruct visibility for motorists and pedestrians and reduce the amount of pavement available for public use.An enforcement request has now been filed with the Planning Authority by lawyer Claire Bonello on behalf of the Sliema Local Council, according to the association. It said no response had yet been received. The association is calling for any structures found to be illegal to be removed and for the land to be returned to public use, while urging authorities to prevent further encroachment onto public spaces. What do you make of the growing use of public spaces by commercial establishments?Photos: Għaqda Residenti Slimiżi•
