The Planning Authority has ordered the immediate removal of an unauthorised structure erected outside a catering establishment along The Strand in Sliema, following a number of complaints about the development. The Authority confirmed that it has issued enforcement notice EC/122/26 over the structure, saying complaints were received while it was still being erected. These included representations from the Sliema Local Council, with concerns raised over the occupation of public space, pedestrian accessibility and potential implications for road safety.According to the PA, enforcement action began immediately after the complaints were received, with those responsible for the structure previously instructed to stop all works on site. The enforcement notice now formally requires the unauthorised development to be removed without delay. The Authority warned that should those responsible fail to comply with the notice, it will take further enforcement action available to it in order to ensure that the development is addressed. The case comes amid continued scrutiny over the use of public space by commercial establishments in some of Malta’s busiest localities, particularly where outdoor structures and street furniture can affect pavements and pedestrian routes. The Planning Authority said it remains committed to protecting the public interest and taking action against illegal development, stressing that enforcement procedures will be pursued where necessary. What do you make of the situation?Photos: Għaqda Residenti Slimiżi•
