Tottenham’s 2008 League Cup-winning defender Pascal Chimbonda has revealed the three players who have impressed him most during the opening weeks of Roberto De Zerbi’s first full season in charge, including one who is yet to start a Premier League game.Despite a summer spend of close to £400m, Tottenham Hotspur have made a poor start to their 2026/27 season, sitting bottom of the Premier League table after five games without a win.Very much unlike the goalscoring football normally associated with a team managed by Roberto De Zerbi, Spurs have found the net just twice so far – both goals coming in their most recent 3-2 defeat to Aston Villa. To be fair, however, Tottenham have shown the intensity and attacking intent for large parts this season, with the biggest problem coming in front of goal rather than in their overall approach. There are still plenty of bright sparks within this new-look Tottenham team, which is why there remains confidence that things will eventually click.Credit: @smw._photographyPascal Chimbonda names his three Tottenham standoutsIn an exclusive interview with Spurs Web, former Tottenham defender Pascal Chimbonda was asked which three Spurs players had impressed him most this season despite the club’s poor form, and what had stood out about them. The former France international responded:“Savio and Bentancur to be honest so far, and Kudus when he came off the bench. “Bentancur for the number of yards he covers on the pitch.“Savio for his ability to eliminate his opponents; he fits so well in our team. “Kudus can also eliminate and provide good delivery.”SávioTottenham – Premier League (2026 – 2027)Appearances3Minutes Played241Average Rating7.23Shots on Target3Goals0Assists0Key Passes9Pass Accuracy (%)84.00Dribble Attempts24Successful Dribbles13Stats correct as of 3 October 2026.The numbers back up Pascal Chimbonda’s Tottenham choicesThere would be little argument with Chimbonda over the three players he has chosen, because the numbers back up much of his reasoning.Savio and Mohammed Kudus have certainly shown their ability to eliminate opponents, with the two Tottenham players currently leading the Premier League charts for take-ons per 90 minutes. Kudus, who is yet to start a Premier League game for Spurs, leads the way on 5.8, while Savio follows on 5.4.In fact, the third and fourth players on the list are also Tottenham players, with Mathys Tel on 3.5 and Omar Marmoush on 3.2.Those numbers have unfortunately counted for little so far because Tottenham’s end product has been poor.As for Rodrigo Bentancur, who has arguably been Spurs’ best player this season, the Uruguay international currently leads the Premier League for defensive contributions per 90 minutes (14.5).R.
