Malta’s animal welfare heroes have been recognised for their dedication and contributions to protecting animals during the sixth edition of the Animal Honours Awards.Organised by the Parliamentary Secretariat for Animal Welfare, the ceremony marked the conclusion of Malta Animal Awareness Week, celebrating the individuals, professionals, organisations and animals that have made a difference in the sector.This year’s awards featured five categories, with winners selected following a public nomination process that gave people the opportunity to recognise those working to improve animal welfare across Malta.The winners of the sixth edition were:Sanctuary Excellence Award: MSPCAVolunteer of the Year Award: Maria AttardSecond Chance Companion Award: FonzuPet-Friendly Business Award: Gian Paul Bongailas, Rabbit GroomerPeople’s Choice Award for Contribution to the Animal Welfare Sector: Gian Paul BongailasThree special awards were also presented to Romina Frendo, Alison Bezzina and James Ryder in recognition of their work and dedication to animal welfare.Parliamentary Secretary for Animal Welfare Alicia Bugeja Said praised the winners and nominees, highlighting the importance of recognising those who dedicate their time, energy and expertise to improving the lives of animals.She said the awards reflect the growing commitment within Maltese society towards greater responsibility, respect and compassion for animals.Commissioner for Animal Welfare Elliot Magro also emphasised the importance of celebrating positive contributions, saying such initiatives help keep animal welfare at the forefront of the public agenda.Meanwhile, Animal Welfare Department Director Dennis Sciberras highlighted the work carried out by professionals, volunteers and organisations, encouraging more people to recognise their role in protecting animals.The annual awards aim to raise awareness about responsible animal care while celebrating those who continue to make a difference in the lives of animals across Malta.Congratulations to all the winners!•
