The family remembered someone patiently working through the tangles in their mom's hair, then coming back after dinner to finish washing it. They sent a lovely letter. No name, just a description and “the nurse who helped Mom with her hair.” I helped gather the supplies that evening. It was one of our techs. When the letter made it into a staff recognition email, the name attached was the RN who'd discharged the patient. She replied right away that it wasn't her. Apparently someone had looked up the discharge nurse and used that name. Our tech has the letter now. She asked for a copy to take home. I'm still stuck on how easily it nearly missed her. We ask families to send feedback, then when somebody does, we don't seem to have a way to figure out who actually did the thing they're thanking us for. Patients calling everyone a nurse doesn't bother me. They have enough going on. But there are techs, EVS staff, transporters, etc. who build real relationships with people, and I wonder how much praise for them gets absorbed into a general “great job nursing” email. Does your unit check unnamed compliments with the staff who were there, or do they just get posted as a unit win? submitted by /u/Quibble_55 [link] [comments]
