Exclusive: Pascal Chimbonda says one Tottenham star ‘doesn’t fit in the team’

In an exclusive chat with Spurs Web, former Tottenham defender Pascal Chimbonda has given his verdict on Archie Gray’s season at right-back following Pedro Porro’s injury and addressed whether Spurs made a mistake selling Djed Spence.Tottenham took a big gamble in the summer when they decided not to replace Djed Spence following his £30m move to Inter Milan, essentially leaving Pedro Porro as the only natural option at right-back.That decision has not turned out particularly well for the north London club, with Porro now set to be sidelined for a month after suffering a hamstring injury that forced him off 19 minutes into Tottenham’s 3-2 defeat to Aston Villa.Midfielder by trade, Archie Gray will have to fill in at right-back for the next three fixtures (at least), having already filled in there for all but one of Spurs’ games this season as Porro struggled for full fitness.A. Obviously, right-back isn’t his preferred position but he’s had to play there a lot. Did Spurs make a mistake selling Djed Spence?”The 2008 League Cup-winning defender replied:“I think Archie Gray doesn’t fit in the Tottenham team because we don’t know what his best position is, so I don’t really rate it higher. “I don’t think they made a bad decision of selling Spence though because he wouldn’t be a first choice and maybe that would have created problems.”Gray has previously insisted that he prefers playing in midfield, although he is happy to play wherever the team needs him. There is little Gray can be accused of doing wrong from the outset, but the reality is that he simply has not worked very well at right-back. Tottenham have never won a game in which Gray has started at right-back, with that having happened 11 times. That leaves Spurs needing to consider their options in the January transfer window, particularly if they want to bring in a quality right-back to provide cover for Porro.Chimbonda says Tottenham must use Dominic Solanke moreTottenham currently sit bottom of the Premier League table after five games of the new season, having failed to win any of their matches and collected just two points. The lack of goals is the biggest reason behind their lowly position, with Spurs finding the net only twice so far. Conor Gallagher and Jan Paul Van Hecke’s late consolation goals against Villa remain the only times Tottenham have scored this season. When asked what is Tottenham’s biggest problem this season and how they can solve it, Chimbonda offered a solution that may not be very popular among Spurs supporters.“The players need to do more in every part of the pitch and try to use Solanke more .”And that is perhaps easier said than done. Dominic Solanke has not exactly made himself a constant presence inside the opposition box this season and has been almost invisible for large periods of Tottenham’s games.D. The England international has simply not done enough to get on the end of the chances and crosses coming his way.READ MORE: Köln manager considers breaking his promise to Mikey Moore but Tottenham may not mind – Spurs WebThe post Exclusive: Pascal Chimbonda says one Tottenham star ‘doesn’t fit in the team’ appeared first on Spurs Web.
