Thomas Tuchel has explained how his decision over who plays right-back for England involves how they can support Bukayo Saka.Since starting as the Three Lions head coach in January 2025, Tuchel has selected numerous right-backs in his teams.Saka is a regular for England, and Tuchel says he plays a role in who he chooses at right-back, with Quansah (right) one optionGettyDjed Spence has made the most such appearances in all competitions with 14, whilst Reece James is close behind on 13.However, both players missed out on the latest England squad amid their respective fitness issues, whilst Tino Livramento withdrew with an injury.Instead, Real Madrid target Jarell Quansah and Trent Alexander-Arnold have played in the role against Spain and the Czech Republic during the new Nations League campaign so far. They have started one game each, with the latter appearing from the off for the first time under Tuchel against Czechia earlier this week.Ahead of the trip to Croatia on Saturday, live on talkSPORT, Tuchel was asked about his thought process behind who he plays in the defensive role for England. He then revealed that Saka, who has started in both matches during the international break, is someone who plays into this thinking in a bid to get the best out of him at right wing.Saka role in England right-back selection“It’s easy, it’s a competition between Trent and Jarell,” Tuchel said to talkSPORT. “It’s not isolated; it’s just them under the microscope.“It’s also how we want to play: what strengths does the opponent have? Where do we want to implement ourselves?“And how’s the connection, for example, with Bukayo? What is a good addition to Bukayo that makes life for Bukayo easier, and helps him?“So, a lot of things to consider, and it’s an easy choice because we cannot get it wrong between the two; they’re two good right-backs.”Alexander-Arnold (right) is another player who can support Saka from right-back for England with his pace and passingGettyTuchel has spoken on the importance of naming a right-sided defender that can get the best out of SakaGettyWho could start at right-back against Croatia?Alexander-Arnold had only played one match under Tuchel before he featured in the 2-0 win away to Czechia. The Madrid full-back repaid the trust shown in him by assisting Anthony Gordon with an excellent cross for the opening goal.In fact, Alexander-Arnold played the full 90 minutes in Prague in a performance that could grant him another start against Croatia.Alongside Quansah, Trevoh Chalobah and Ezri Konsa are two other players who could play at right-back if needed. However, the pair are more likely to feature at centre-back if they were to play.Tuchel therefore has plenty of options to choose from, but has made it clear that Quansah and Alexander-Arnold are his competing duo.
