I’m a bedside Med-Surg RN and currently pregnant. My provider gave me a 20 lb lifting restriction, which I submitted to my employer. Despite the restriction, I’m still being placed in a regular patient assignment. I asked my charge nurse about it today, and they specifically checked with my manager and confirmed that I’m supposed to remain in assignment. I’m trying to understand how this is supposed to work practically. During a normal shift, patients unexpectedly need to use the bathroom, transfer to the chair, be boosted/repositioned, etc. If I’m in the middle of med pass and a patient needs assistance that could require more than 20 lbs of lifting, I would essentially have to stop what I’m doing and find another nurse or tech who can assist. Obviously I’m going to follow my restriction and ask for help rather than risk hurting myself, but this seems extremely impractical with a normal Med-Surg assignment, especially when everyone else already has their own patients and workload. For nurses who have had pregnancy or other lifting restrictions: Did your hospital keep you in a regular bedside assignment and have coworkers assist with anything outside your restrictions, or were you moved to modified/light duty? How did your unit make it work? submitted by /u/LeagueEmbarrassed354 [link] [comments]
