Exclusive: Destiny Udogie needs one thing to become best left-back in England, says Pascal Chimbonda

Wait 5 sec.

In an exclusive chat with Spurs Web, former Tottenham defender Pascal Chimbonda has revealed who Roberto De Zerbi should choose between Destiny Udogie and Andy Robertson at left-back, while explaining what Udogie still needs to improve to become one of the Premier League’s best.Following consecutive 17th-placed finishes, the Tottenham Hotspur board decided enough was enough and finally opted to spend big this summer, improving the quality in several areas across the pitch.Close to £400m was spent and almost half of the starting XI was replaced, yet Tottenham find themselves bottom of the Premier League table after five games, with just two points and two goals scored. The first part of that summer rebuild was Andy Robertson, who arrived as a free agent after an incredible decade at Liverpool, where he established himself as one of the finest left-backs in the game over the last few years. His start to life at Tottenham, however, has been somewhat inconsistent.Credit: @smw._photographyPascal Chimbonda chooses between Destiny Udogie and Andy Robertson at TottenhamSpurs’ first-choice left-back Destiny Udogie has struggled for full fitness throughout the season and has managed only one Premier League start, coming against Nottingham Forest a month ago.He has, however, started both of Tottenham’s Carabao Cup games this season against Charlton and Liverpool. Udogie was Spurs’ best performer in the latter match and could even have registered two assists had Tottenham’s attack not fumbled some simple chances in front of goal. That left De Zerbi with little option but to start Robertson in the Premier League, and it is certainly not all bad for the summer arrival. He remains arguably the best crosser in the Tottenham squad and even registered an assist against Aston Villa, setting up Jan Paul Van Hecke for a simple header from an excellent free-kick delivery. In the same game, however, Robertson was largely responsible for Villa’s opener after making a mess of a clearance while Spurs were down to 10 men, when Micky Van de Ven was receiving treatment on the sidelines. In an exclusive interview with former Tottenham full-back Pascal Chimbonda, we asked him: “Destiny Udogie has looked really good since his return from injury? Just how good could he become if he stays fit? Does he have the potential to evolve into the best LB in the Premier League?”The 2006 World Cup runner-up replied:“I think Udogie should be first choice left back without disrespecting Robertson. He so strong and good on the ball but need to work on his defensive side more if he want to become one of the best left back of the league.”Chris Hughton also backs Destiny Udogie to show his bestA few days ago, former Tottenham man and recently inducted Hall of Fame member Chris Hughton also suggested that an injury-free Udogie could finally show the best of himself, while describing Robertson as an ‘asset’ to the club.Hughton said:“What you want in each position is different types of players. Over the last couple of seasons I’ve felt a little bit for [Destiny] Udogie. In that position, I look at him – he’s quick, he’s a good size, he’s strong, he’s got a good left foot. “So I think there’s all the ingredients of a very good left-back. He’s been interrupted by injury, so I don’t think that has helped him. Hopefully, if he has a relatively injury-free season, then we can start seeing perhaps the best of him.“And in [Andy] Robertson, you know what you’re going to get. He’s an experienced player. Is he what he was five years ago? Well, not only five, six, seven years ago, or four years ago, he was playing in a very, very good team. A very, very good Liverpool team that won the league and that can carry you.“So now he’s perhaps got a little bit more responsibility here. He’s come to a club that is different and we’re in different places to where he’s been the last few seasons with success and everything. So there’s a different type of responsibility on him, but he’s a good player, generally fit and a really good asset to the club.”READ MORE: Six Tottenham legends who deserve a statue after major update on club plans – Spurs WebThe post Exclusive: Destiny Udogie needs one thing to become best left-back in England, says Pascal Chimbonda appeared first on Spurs Web.
