Tottenham’s record signing Sandro Tonali continues to deliver mixed displays, turning in another unflattering performance with Italy during the international break.Tottenham Hotspur’s poor start to life in the Premier League, where they remain winless after five games, has brought much scrutiny on their players, especially the new recruits. The likes of Sandro Tonali have not been exempt, with pundits criticising the Italian, who has yet to set the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium alight despite his big-money move from Newcastle United.Graeme Souness even recently described Tonali as an ‘ordinary Joe’. He said: “Tonali – is he a £100 million footballer? It is not the boy’s fault. I think he is an ordinary Joe. “I think he is very steady, he will give you what he has got in terms of effort, quite aggressive, good athlete, not great on the ball, not great in seeing a cute and clever pass. Again, I think he is a £100 million footballer? I describe him as a steady eddy.”Tonali, though, is currently away with Italy for the September international break and has picked up plenty of minutes, though his performances have been mixed. He was unimpressive against Belgium in Italy’s first game of the break but produced a decent display in their 4-1 win over Turkey. Tonali was then in action against World Cup semi-finalists France in their 1-1 draw, and the reviews are in.S. The Tottenham record signing was not poor but neither was he a standout, as reflected in Sky Sports Italia’s match ratings, where he was handed a 6/10.Explaining the score, they wrote: “He starts off with a slow, short lateral pass that could have triggered the explosive pass for Olise, who instead stumbles and passes.“However, he then regains grit and strength in his legs, which he puts to use in the midfield barrage. He doesn’t have Pirlo’s intuition, but he holds up the midfield with solidity and geometry.”Sky Sports Italia were not the only outlet to weigh in, with Corriere dello Sport also giving Tonali a 6/10 rating. They noted that Tonali was “overly casual” with a clearance, allowing France to create a situation that gave them “shivers.”The publication did, however, highlight that the Spurs midfielder managed to “limit” Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembele, adding some positivity to his overall display.Tonali’s numbers underline mixed performanceThe assessments from the two publications were not far off from FotMob, who rated Tonali’s performance at 6.3.Unfortunately, he was the lowest-rated Italian starter on the pitch, far from the level Roberto De Zerbi or Spurs would want to see from their midfielder. Looking at his underlying numbers from the match, it is hard to argue against the ratings handed out:StatisticValueMinutes played62Goals0Assists0Accurate passes29/31 (94%)Defensive contributions3Touches38Passes into final third2Accurate long balls1/1 (100%)Ground duels won2/5 (40%)READ MORE: Tottenham’s forgotten 10 minutes: When Kane, Bale and Modric all played togetherThe post Tottenham might be worried about Sandro Tonali's latest reviews from Italian press appeared first on Spurs Web.
